Songjin (KPSON)

It is one of the most important ports in NE Korea. The main export is timber.

Summer zone for ships over 100m in length and Winter Seasonal Area for ships of 100m or less in length. Winter Dec 1 to Feb 28/29, Summer Mar 1 to Nov 30.

Songjin is located on the NE side of Korea, lying on the SW side of Immyeong Hae.

Except with W winds, anchorage in Songjin Hang, N of Songjin Pando, cannot be considered safe. However anchorage may be obtained, in depths of approx 14.0m, approx 0.5nm N of Hanggu Dan (40°39.6'N 129°12.8'E), with fair protection from the S. Anchorage may also be obtained, in a depth of 10.0m, sand, with Hanggu Dan bearing 142° distance 0.2nm. Although near the deep water berth, it is better protected from SE winds, frequent in the vicinity except in the winter. Small vessels can anchor in Songjin Ohang, with depths of 0.6m to 4.0m, during N winds.

Compulsary.

The S limit of Songjin Hang is a line joining Sajin Dan (40°39'N 129°13'E) and a beacon 1.75nm NNW of Yujin Dan.

Lights are exhibited at the breakwaters as follows: S Breakwater (white metal column, concrete base, 5.0m in height). N Breakwater (red metal column, concrete base, 5.0m in height).

Small tugs are available.

During Apr to May from approx 1100-1500hrs, strong S or SSW winds are liable to blow at Songjin, and are known locally as the "Songjin sand-winds". Abnormally warm and dry winds sometimes blow down from the mountains in spring and early summer. The rivers always freeze in winter, but the harbour does not become ice bound. The river usually freezes within the first 10 days of Dec and thaws by the middle of Mar. Thin ice is sometimes seen floating in the middle of the bay, but is not sufficient to obstruct navigation.
