Chongjin (KPCHO)

Mainly handles cargo between Japan, Manchuria and North Korean ports. Exports include iron, steel, fish products and bean oil.

Summer zone for ships over 100m in length and Winter Seasonal Area for ships of 100m or less in length. Winter Dec 1 to Feb 28/29, Summer Mar 1 to Nov 30.

Chongjin is situated on the NE coast of Korea, on the N shore of Cheongjin Hang.

LOA 231m, draught 9.1m.

Large vessels can obtain anchorage in depths of 10.0-35m, in good holding ground, mud or sand, off the NE side of Cheongjin Hang. SW winds may cause a heavy sea. There is also good holding in depths of 7.0-18.0m, mud, on the N side of the detached harbour.

The approach channels have a depth of 18.0m.

Pilotage is compulsory. Pilot boards 3.75nm SSE of the detached breakwater of the E harbour. The pilot will not board before 0800hrs local time, with entry not normally allowed after 1600hrs local time. Vessels leaving must do so at least 1.5 hours before sunset.

The SE limit is a line drawn from Gomalsan Dan (41°46.0'N 129°51.0'E) to the summit of Pyol Bong, 5nm SW.

Chonma San (41°47.0'N 129°49.0'E) is a prominent landmark with a height of 102m, standing at the head of Cheongjin Hang. There are four radio masts on the E slope of the hill at the head of Cheongjin Hang.

A traffic separation scheme has been established in the approaches to Cheongjin Hang. This scheme is not adopted by the IMO and it is not known what regulations are in force, however mariners are advised to assume Rule 10 of The International Regulations for Preventing Collisions at Sea (1972) applies.

Two tugs are available.

Prevailing winds: NW'ly in the winter, E'ly in the summer. During the period between Apr-early Aug, thick fog, sometimes hindering navigation can last for days. It is often blown in by E'ly winds from the Japan Sea. Snowfall, usually light, lasts from early Nov-Apr. Ice sometimes flows from the N into the vicinity, but is not considered a hindrance to navigation.

Vessels ETA at the pilot boarding ground (3.75nm SSE of the E harbour breakwater, 41°46.5'N 129°49.5'E) should be passed through the vessel's agent as no VHF contact is possible.
