Wonsan (KPWON)

It is considered to be the most important port on the E coast of Korea. Exports include plumbago, gold and cattle. Imports include rice, wheat flour, salt and mineral oils.

Summer Zone for ships over 100m in length and Winter Seasonal Area for ships of 100m or less in length. Winter Dec 1 to Feb 28/29, Summer Mar 1 to Nov 30.

Situated on the E coast of Korea, Wonsan lies on the S side of Yeongheung Man.

Anchorage may be obtained N of the E and W breakwaters in depths of 7.0-13.0m. A good position, sheltered from W winds, is 0.5nm NNW of Changdeog Do, in a depth of 12.0m. A designated anchorage for foreign vessels has been established 1.5nm N of Changdok To. There is also an anchorage inside the breakwaters in a depth of 7.0m, sand.

Vessels are required to follow the traffic separation scheme. If approaching from the S steer to pass between Irari Gak and Taeo Do (39°13.0'N 127°38.0'E). Care should be taken not to close 1nm off Irari Gak to proceed in depths of less than 11.0m. Then proceed E of Sin Do to join the traffic scheme, which leads to the harbour. Vessels up to 500GT can use the fairway leading between the breakwaters. Larger vessels must pass SE of Changdok To.

The pilot is reported to board at a position approx 4nm ENE of Yo Do.

The harbour limits extends ESE from Hodo Pando then SE to seaward of Ung Do, Yo Do and Kuk To to the vicinity of Amyong Kkut.

Changdok To (39°10.5'N 127°26.4'E), which is 13m in height, lies on a spit extending 0.75nm E from the W shore of the breakwater. There are 2 breakwaters extending on its spit to the shore. The E breakwater extends W from Changdok To for approx 450m. The W breakwater extends W to the shore leaving a fairway approx 100m wide between the two. A bridge crosses the fairway linking the 2 breakwaters. Lights are exhibited from both ends of the E breakwater and from the end of the W breakwater. Changdok To Light is exhibited from the island. A fog signal is sounded from the light.

A traffic separation scheme is used to enter the harbour.

Prevailing winds: Occasionally W'ly. In Jan and Feb the W'ly winds are very cold, but in early spring and summer, the winds are sometimes abnormally warm and dry due to the local effect. Wonsan Hang is never ice bound but with warm E'ly winds in spring, drift ice may enter the harbour.

The following are extracts from the regulations for the port: Article 1: The stay of a vessel when made fast alongside must not exceed 3 days except on account of weather or under special circumstances. Article 5: If any damage is done to the wharves or piers, the duty of repair rests with the hirer unless the ship was not under control. Article 6: The governor, if he considers it necessary, for the public welfare or for official reasons, may forbid the use of wharves or piers, may cancel permission to use them, may change the berth appointed or may cast off a vessel from a wharf or pier.
