The port facilities are owned and operated by Electric Power Development Co Ltd and comprise 1 pier providing 4 berths handling coal, break bulk and liquid cargo.

Matsushima is situated at the western extremity of Kyushu in Nagasaki Prefecture, approx 40km NW of Nagasaki.

LOA 235m, draught 14.0m, beam 14.0m and 95,692DWT.

Waiting area 32°58.0'N 129°35.0'E.

A lightbuoy lies on the N side of a shoal patch 0.6nm NE of Bin Shima, another lightbuoy is moored 0.15nm NNW of Sugiyama Se. The harbour entrance is protected on its NW side by an angled breakwater extending 0.4nm NE from the N extremity to Kushi Shima, a light tower stands at its head.

Pilotage is compulsory for all vessels over 10,000DWT, available during daytime only. Pilot boards in position 32°58.03'N 129°34.12'E, 2nm SW from Matsushima Breakwater Light.

Range max 3.5m, min 0.5m. Max tidal current is 0.6kts in the vicinity of the breakwater end.

Compulsory for larger vessels. One tug of 3,600hp available, assisted by mooring craft. For vessels of 60,000DWT and over 3 tugs are require, for smaller vessels, 2 tugs. Further tugs can be brought from Nagasaki or Sasebo.
