Monbetsu (JPMBE)

Monbetsu is a port of entry and largely serves as a base for the Sea of Okhotsk fishing fleet. Coastal tankers and vessels carrying cement and lumber also call at the port.

North Pacific Winter Seasonal Zone, Winter Oct 16 to Apr 15, Summer Apr 16 to Oct 15.

Monbetsu is situated on the northern coast of Hokkaido facing the Sea of Okhotsk.

LOA 240m, draught 10.5m.

Approx 300,000t of cargo and 10,000 vessels handled annually.

Outer anchorage: A quarantine anchorage has been established within a circle of approx 0.15nm radius, centred 0.7nm SE of Benten Misaki.

The approach channel to No 3 Wharf has a depth of 12.0m, max draught in the channel 10.5m and the approach channel continuing to No 2 Wharf has a dredged depth of 7.5m. Caution: Drifting sand tends to accumulate in the harbour, so masters of deep draught vessels must be wary of changes in depths.

Not compulsory. Pilots are available from Kushiro with sufficient advance notice, when required. Pilots are only available from sunrise to one hour before sunset.

The harbour limit is a line drawn 090° from Benten Misaki for 0.55nm, then 180° to the shore.

The following navigational marks may be of use in the approach to Monbetsu Ko: Monbetsu Ko Main Light (44°21.4'N 143°20.9'E) periodically exhibited from a white tower with red bands, 13m in height. Monbetsu Radio Beacon tower, with an elevation of 80m, 1.1nm S of Benten Misaki. Monbetsu Yama (44°20.0'N 143°18.0'E), 2nm SW of Benten Misaki, 334m in height, thickly wooded with dark trees; four TV towers stand 0.275nm E of the summit. Ottsushi Yama, 0.5nm W of Benten Misaki, 83m in height, with a temple on its E slope. N Breakwater detached arm effectively extends N Breakwater 0.15nm ESE; a light is periodically exhibited, and a fog signal is sounded, on the outer end. A lightbuoy (red; red flashing light) is moored 0.05nm E of this arm.

Range max 2.54m; min -0.53m.

Tugs: There are 10 tugs available, ranging from 300hp to 2,200hp capacity.
