Seydisfjordur (ISSEY)

The port has a deep and well sheltered harbour which is among the best in Iceland. There are two herring processing plants in the town. Regular passenger and car ferry connections operate between Seydisfjordur and Scandinavia.

Seydisfjordur is located at the SW end of the fjord of the same name.

Max. Size: LOA 230m, draught 9.0m.

Approx. 70 vessels and 59,000t of cargo handled annually.

Good anchorage, in depths of 11.0-15.0m, may be obtained in Skalanesbot (65° 17.42'N 13°44.00'W). The holding ground is good but a considerable swell is raised by NE winds. Small vessels may obtain anchorage 0.7nm WSW of Sorlastadharvik, which lies close W of Hanefsstadhareyri, in a depth of approx 26m, off a prominent building on the shore. Small craft may anchor W of Gullsteinseyri and in area about 20m midway between Hanefsstadhareyri, with Brimnes in line with the extremity of Gullsteinseyri bearing about 067°. Storms blowing into the fjord do not raise much sea at these 2 anchorages, but gales blowing out of the fjord may cause vessels to drag as the bottom slopes steeply. Temporary fine weather anchorage may be obtained in a depth of approx 37m off Vestdalseyri, but it is not a safe anchorage and the bottom shelves so steeply that it is necessary to lay out hawsers to the shore. The best anchorage in Seydisfjordur may be obtained off the town, wherever the depth is less than 40m and clear of the wreckage (65°16.30'N 13°59.80'W). The anchorage is exposed to frequent gales which blow throughout the fjord, especially in Autumn.

There is excellent approach with no hazards whatsoever.

Pilotage is not compulsory, but is available and recommended. Harbour may be contacted on VHF Chs 16 and 12. Pilot station located at 65°17.30'N 13°55.00'W. Service available throughout 24hrs. Two pilots available.

The port limits are bounded by Grenistangi-Grytareyri.

Dalatangi Lighthouse (Fl 5s); Brimnes Lighthouse (Fl (2) WRG 10s).

Mean spring range about 1.4m; mean neap range about 0.6m.

Tugs are not available.

Weather is generally mild. No prevailing winds, winds are not usually strong when they do occur.
