Tarakan Island (IDTRK)

The port has a well sheltered harbour subject to strong local currents. Tarakan is a commercial port open to international trade. The main products handled are oil from the local oil fields, general cargo and forest products. The oil terminal is operated by Tesoro Indonesia Petrol Company.

Tarakan Island is located in Tarakan City, North Kalimantan, Indonesia.

Harbour: LOA 1466.5m, beam 25m, draught 5.5m, 15,407DWT Off Shore: LOA 230m, BCM 32.26m, draught 18.5m, 83,353DWT.

Approx 13,000,000t of cargo handled annually.

Vessels awaiting berth may anchor N of the Fairway Lightbuoy (03°15'N 117° 53'E) in depths of 20.0m, mud and sand. A short swept channel, clear for all types of vessels, leads to the anchorage is available in 30m of water, 5nm E of Tanjung Batu. Anchorage may be obtained in the area bounded by the following positions (bearing and distances from the root of General Cargo Jetty): ..... Bearing Distance 1. 319° 0.71nm 2. 299.5° 4.54nm 3. 288° 4.87nm 4. 196.5° 0.98nm 5. 105° 0.92nm, and then to (1). Another anchorage area lies in the swept SE part of the harbour between the entrances to Sungai Pemusian, a small river E of the port, and Sungai Sebengkok, another small river entering N of the port. Approaching Pelabuhan Lingkas make the outer lightbuoy moored 15nm E of Tanjung Batu then on the alignment of the leading lights entry is made by the channel, length 21nm width approx 1,500m and least depth of 12.0m, leading NW from Gosong Menulun to the harbour. When the head of General Cargo Jetty bears 347.5°, alter course and steer for it, which leads to Pelabuhan Lingkas and the pier. The port basin has depths from 8.0m-12.0m. A lightbuoy (conical, red and white bands) is moored 0.5nm S of General Cargo Jetty. Caution: The following dangers lie in the approach to the cargo jetties: ..... A rock which lies 0.2nm W. A dangerous wreck 0.1nm NW of the general cargo jetty head (03°17.4'N 117° 35.6'E). An unmarked shoal patch lies 0.3nm S of the oil jetty. An unmarked shoal patch also lies 0.3nm W of the jetty head and 0.35nm NNW of the general cargo jetty.

Berthing and unberthing day light hours only. Vessels of up to 55,000t and 210m in length are moored head to the outgoing stream, and are moored and unmoored at slack water. Loading is carried out at a rate of 150-400tph. A black ball, displayed on shore, indicates a vessel must anchor.

Compulsory. With advance notice, pilots are available for the Sangai Bulungan and Sangai Sesayap estuaries. Sea pilots are available throughout 24 hours and board at No 1 Buoy, 15nm E of Tanjung Batu. Berthing pilot boards at anchorage, available between 0600 and 1800hrs. Request for pilots should be made through local agents 12 hours prior to arrival and 10 hours before departure.

Tarakan is bounded by the arc of a circle, radius 1.5nm, centred on the head of the Oil Jetty (03°17'N 117°36'E), and is fronted by two jetties and a pier.

There is one tug available, 1 x 265HP. Request for tug assistance should be made to Pertamina. There are many launches which handle cargo barges and mooring lines.

Radio: Coastal Radio Station: Tarakan Coast Radio Station; Callsign 'PKO', operational throughout 24 hours. Port radio operated from the Harbour Office, callsign: 'Tarakan Radio'. It is recommended to use Jakarta Radio for passing messages at long range, callsign "PKX". Working hours are 0000-0400hrs UTC on 8542kHz and 0000-1200hrs UTC on 8752kHz. Inmarsat communication is possible. VHF: Pilots & Port: Ch 16, 12, 14. Station callsign ("PKO4") works throughout 24 hours.

Immigration: All crew members must have a valid travel document.

Free pratique is granted on arrival. Ship Sanitation Control Certificate (SSCC) and Ship Sanitation Control Exemption Certificate (SSCEC) can be renewed at Tarakan.
