Palopo (IDPPO)

Palopo is a large town with anchorage port administrate capital by Luwu Districtof South Sulawesi. There is a ferry terminal connecting to Malili and a fishing port with regular prawn trade. The oil terminal, Karangkarangan lies 9 miles S of the port. Exports comprise of timber, rattan and copra.

Palopo is situated in a bay in the NW corner of the head of Bone Bay, on the W coast of S Sulawesi.

Draught 9.8m.

Anchorage may be obtained in a depth of 11.0m, 0.5nm ENE of the stone breakwater. Smaller vessels can anchor closer inshore in a depth of 7.0m. The holding ground is good, but care must be taken to avoid the detached reefs and a dangerous wreck, and numerous fishing stakes ESE of the stone breakwater and in the N part of the bay.

The port is bounded by an arc of a circle, radius 2nm, centred on the head of the stone breakwater fronting Palopo on which there is a tower.

A light is exhibited on the breakwater.

Radio: It is recommended to use Jakarta Radio for passing messages at long range, callsign "PKX". Working hours are 0000-0400hrs UTC on 8542kHz and 0000-1200hrs UTC on 8752kHz. Inmarsat communication is possible.

Immigration: All crew members must have a valid travel document. Crews from communist countries are not allowed to disembark whilst in port.

Should be advised to agent at 10, 3, 2 and 1 day prior to arrival. In addition to date and time of arrival the Master should also advise the estimated draught on arrival.

Free pratique is granted on arrival. Ship Sanitation Control Certificate (SSCC) and Ship Sanitation Control Exemption Certificate (SSCEC) can be renewed at the major ports.
