Pangkalan Susu (IDPKS)

The port has both onshore and offshore loading facilities for crude oil, LPG and asphalt. There is an SPM terminal moored at the extremity of a submarine oil pipeline, operated by Pertamina, extending 9.5nm NE from the shore. There are also several small oil jetties and a general cargo wharf for timber, passengers and inter island traffic. Small shuttle tankers from Pangkalan Susu operate between the oil jetties and Pangkalan Susu SPM. The port is a commercial port, opened to international trade and an agency branch for the port of Belawan.

Pangkalan Susu is located on the NE coast of Sumatera, approx 90km N of Belawan.

Berths: LOA 185m, 10,000DWT. SPM: Max LOA 275m, draught 22m, 150,000DWT, BCM 129m.

Anchorage area is located 2nm E of SBM.

Pangkalan Susu SBM (red flashing light) (04°13'N 098°24.5'E) is approached from seaward from a buoy moored 1.5nm N of the SPM. The SBM can be approached from NW or NE passing on either side of the conical buoy (black and yellow bands) taking care to avoid 3 charted obstructions lying between positions (04° 15'N 098°27'E) and (04°12'N 098°27'E). Inner approach channel: From S of Pulau Sembilan the channel to Pengkalan Susu, across the inner bar, is marked by the following starboard hand lightbuoys: Lightbuoy No 7, also marking a dangerous wreck (PA) close SE, and by Lightbuoys No 9, 11, 13 and 15.

Compulsory. The port is only open to vessels owned or on charter to Pertamina. There are two pilot waiting anchorages: For tankers: 04°16.0'N 098°25.0'E. For dry cargo: 04°16.0'N 098°22.8'E. Pilots require 10 hours notice prior to arrival and 5 hours prior to departure.

When secured to the SPM, steam turbine vessels will need to run with very slow speed astern, and with a tug made fast aft.

Tides: The low water is 1.5m under MSL. The outgoing tidal stream sets onto the berths and the ingoing stream away from them. Current: Max velocity is 1.5kts in NE'ly and 1kt in NW'ly direction.

Prevailing winds: Variable. Rainfall: Heavy rainfall occurs from Sep-Jan with the heaviest occurring between Oct and Dec. Visibility: Visibility around the port is considered good with a range of approx 10km.

Immigration: All crew members must have a valid travel document. Crews from communist countries are not allowed to disembark whilst in port.
