Bengkalis (IDBKI)

Bengkalis is a small port for handling general cargo and ferry passengers.

Bengkalis is situated on an island of the same name, off the E coast of Sumatera, in the Malacca Straits.

Max draught 6.0m.

Anchorage can be made anywhere in the approach channel from NW, or in Pelabuhan Bengkalis, with good holding ground of mud, sand and stiff clay.

The channel from the Malacca Strait to port passes through the Bengkalis Strait, length of 48km, width 100-200m with a depth of 10.5m LWS. A dangerous wreck lies off the pier. Maximum depth in port basin is 7.0m LWS.

Sea pilotage is compulsory and provided by Morong, for passage through Selat Bengkalis, harbour pilotage is unavailable. Pilot boards vessels in position 4.5nm E of the shore station. Vessels waiting for the pilot should anchor from 3.0-3.5nm E of the pilot station.

The limits of Bengkalis roadstead are: Meridians 0.55nm E and W, respectively, of Government Pier (01°28'N 102°06'E), extending up to 0.82nm offshore.

Bengkalis Light (tower, 30m in height) (001°28.23'N 102°06.24'E).

Berthing is not permitted at night, but unberthing may take place at all times.

Mean spring range 2.8m; mean neap range 0.7m. Current: Current in the port normally sets to SE, while at low water sets to SW. Max speed of current is 2kts.

Tugs are stationed at Sungai pakning.

Radio: It is recommended to use Jakarta Radio for passing messages at long range, callsign "PKX". Working hours are 0001-0400hrs UTC on 8542kHz and 0001-1200hrs UTC on 8752kHz. Inmarsat communication is possible. VHF: Pilots: Ch 16, 12, 14, call "PKP22".

Immigration: All crew members must have a valid travel document.

Should be advised to Pertamina ship Sungai pakning at least 96, 24 and 6 hours in advance, corrections of more than 3 hours immediately.
