Belawan (IDBLW)

Belawan is the port for Medan, 18km south. As well as handling general, container, bulk cargoes and oil products the port accommodates a substantial passenger throughput. The port is a major exporter of rubber and palm oil, with a growing export trade in manufactured goods; also forest products, tobacco, tea and coffee.

Belawan is situated on the NE coast of Sumatra facing the busy Malacca Strait.

Harbour: LOA 274.48m, beam 48m, draught 8.5m, 14,9962DWT. Offshore: LOA 183.1m, 49,997DWT.

Outer anchorage 03°55'N 098°46'E is established NE of No 2 Lightbuoy at the pilot boarding position. Anchorage is prohibited in the following areas: Within 0.32nm on each side of the axis of Alur Pelayaran Belawan to a N limit of Lat 03°55'N. Within the pipeline area between latitude 03°51'N and latitude 03°51.5'N, extending from the coast to the loading area (03°51'N 098°47'E). In Pelabuhan Belawan, E of longitude 098°41'E.

Alur Pelayaran Belawan, which is 75m wide at its narrowest part, is subject to periodical dredging, and depths are subject to frequent changes. The channel is approx 9nm length, 100m width and 8-10m depth at LWS. The channel is provided with 9 lightbuoys and 5 leading lights in addition to the leading light beacons on Dermaga Samudera. The max permitted draught on any tide is 10% less than the predicted depth of water. The Sea Buoy, red/white vertical striped (Fl W 6s 6M) is located in position 03° 58.1'N 098°47.5'E, 5nm from Belawan Channel.

Compulsory for vessels of more than 150GT. Pilot boards near Lightbuoy No 2 (03° 54.25'N 098°44.75'E). Pilot can be contacted on VHF Ch 12 and should be ordered through agent at least 8 hours before ETA and 4 hours before ETD. Vessels requiring a pilot should confirm their ETA at least 48 hours in advance. If unable to do so the appropriate signal of the International Code should be displayed, and the vessel should wait at the outer anchorage for the arrival of the pilot. The pilot vessel, when on station, cruises in position 03°55'N 098°46'E and shows: ..... By day Interco "H". At night A white, quick flashing light. Pilotage is available throughout 24 hours. Sea and harbour pilots are embarked when a berth has been allocated. If 2 or more vessels are waiting, preference will be given to that of the greater tonnage.

The port limits are the parallels of 03°46'N and 03°48'N, meridians of 98°40'E and 98°43'E.

Nipah Larangan Lighthouse (03°54.1'N 098°40.4'E); p Fl (3) 20s 44m 17M will assist Masters to approach the anchorage. At each end of the Pertamina "T" head jetty (03°47.5N 098°42.5'E). Red beacon (03°47'N 098°41'E) off the NW corner of Belawan town. Sungai Nunang Light (green beacon) (0.25nm NW), on the NW bank of the river.

Single traffic only is permitted in the channel. Vessels leaving harbour have priority over those entering.

Range 2.5m. Tidal streams outside of, and off, the entrance 03°53'N 098°45'E to Pelabuhan Belawan, set as follows; ..... There are 6 x 1,600-2,400hp and 3 x 250-350hp available. Tugs join between Lightbuoys No 9 and 11. Ships line must be used for towing. Port regulations require tug assistance as follows: .....
