La Ceiba (HNLCE)

The port is a port of entry and one of the main Honduran ports for the export of fruit and timber, mainly used by refrigerated dry cargo vessels carrying exported bananas and also by small coastal traders.

La Ceiba is located on the Atlantic coastline of Honduras, close W of Punta Congrejal, at the mouth of the river of the same name.

Draught 8.0m

Anchorage is available in an open roadstead, 1nm NW of the pier, in a depth of 15m. The bottom is sand and mud, with good holding. Anchorage off the E side of the pier is prohibited.

Access channel is 600m in length, 100m wide, depth 4.2-6.0m.

Compulsory for all vessels and is available throughout 24 hours. Pilot to be requested 2 hours in advance. The pilot boards approx 1nm NW of the pier in response to the international pilotage signal.

From a position NE of Isla Utila, the route leads S for approx 24nm to La Ceiba, passing with position from Punta Oeste Light (16°16.0'N 086°36.0'W), E of Utila Peak Light (red metal framework tower, 11m in height) 18m WSW. Useful mark: La Ceiba Pier Head Light (wooden tower, 9.0m in height) (15° 47.0'N 086°48.0'W).

Berthing only allowed during daylight hours. The best times for berthing alongside are just after sunrise or early in the evening.

Range 0.3m. Currents are reported to be E approx 0.5kt, although they are severely effected by winds. Discoloured water from the mouth of Rio Congrejal extends for some distance off the coast.

Tugs are not available.

Prevailing winds: NE-SE'ly. The local weather is generally calm with gentle breezes from the NE by day and the SW by night, except during N'ly winds.
