Tela (HNTEA)

The port of Tela is presently used by tankers only, discharging Mogas 87 and 95 and diesel for one cargo receiver.

North Atlantic Seasonal Tropical Area, Tropical Nov 1 to Jul 15, Summer Jul 16 to Oct 31.

The port of Tela is situated at the S end of the bay of the same name, 70km W of La Ceiba in the Caribbean.

Offshore - LOA 200m, draught 12.0m, 52,000DWT.

Approx 320,000t of cargo exported and 20 vessels handled annually.

Anchorage can be taken N or NW of the pier head in depths of 14.0 - 18.0m. It is recommended that the main engines remain on standby during the months from Dec. to May at this anchorage as the vessel may need to put to sea quickly in the event of a sudden build up of swell.

Generally two mooring gangs available. No special requirements.

Compulsory for vessels over 300GT. Pilots board 0.5nm N of the pier.

Daylight navigation only.

Range 0.3m.

No tugs stationed in Tela but on request one of the three tug boats in Puerto Cortes are available; 1 x 1,800hp/bollard pull 40m and 2 x 1,200hp/bollard pull 25m. One tug is compulsory for berthing/unberthing vessels with 300GT and over, two for vessels with 10,000GT and over. If vessel equipped with bow thruster only one tug compulsory.

Prevailing winds are E'ly and NE'ly. Strong N'ly winds may be experienced in the winter months.

When officials board the vessel, two copies of Maritime Health Declaration are required to be presented. In case of any suspected disease or fever onboard, same to be advised to agents prior to arrival.
