Puerto Castilla (HNPCA)

The harbour is situated inside Cape Honduras and affords natural protection on three sides with an opening to the W, with mostly no swell. The port is mainly used for banana exports in containers, packaged timber and palm oil. Management personnel for agents and stevedores are usually flown in from Puerto Cortes or San Pedro Sula.

North Atlantic Seasonal Tropical Area, Tropical Nov 1 to Jul 15, Summer Jul 16 to Oct 31.

Puerto Castilla is located on the N shore of Bahia de Trujillo, approx 2nm SE of Cabo de Honduras Light.

LOA 225m, beam 32.26m, draught 13.5m, 63,056DWT.

Approx 1,400,000t of cargo and 133,000TEU handled annually.

Anchorage, sheltered from all except W winds, is available 0.5nm S of the pier, in a depth of 33m. The bottom is hard sand and mud.

Directions for entering harbour: From a position NW of Punta Caxinas (16° 02.0'N 086°01.0'W) the route leads S passing 1-1.5nm off the same point, to a position SW of Punta Caxinas; then following the trend of the coast direct to the pier.

A coastguard station is situated at the port.

Weather conditions may delay berthing and unberthing for vessels not equipped with a bow thrust as there are no tugs available. Berthing and unberthing is at master and pilot's discretion. Generally, there are 2 mooring gangs on pier. No special requirements.

Compulsory for vessels over 300GT, arrangements should be made through agent. Pilot boards approx 0.5nm S of pier. No special requirements for boarding. Must be ordered 24 hours in advance.

The principal marks are: Landmark: Tank (16°00.0'N 085°58.0'W), at Puerto Castilla. Major light: Cabo de Honduras Light (16°02.0'N 086°01.0'W)

Daylight navigation is recommended. However vessels can arrive and sail throughout 24 hours.

Range 0.45m. Under normal conditions the current in the bay is less than 1kts.

Prevailing winds: NE-SE'ly. The port is well sheltered from NE to S winds, but becomes dangerous with NNW and W winds. A strong swell enters the bay with N winds.

Two copies of Maritime Health Declaration to be presented on health official's visit. In the event of any suspected disease or fever onboard, same to be advised to agents prior to vessel's arrival in order to verify procedures with authorities.
