Nicaro (CUICR)

The port is currently closed for commercial operations. Information for the port is retained should the port reopen. Nicaro is a port built to serve the Nickel Processing Corporation's nearby plant. Fuel, gas oil and coal are discharged at the port.

Nicaro is located on the N coast of Cuba, inside Levisa Bay.

Max LOA 160m, draught 8.5m.

Two anchorages in Bahia de Levisa, which have good holding ground and can each accommodate a vessel of 156m LOA, are situated (with reference to head of Nicaro Pier): ..... No 1: 0.95nm ENE. Depths 12-13m, mud. No 2: 0.6nm NE. Depths 10-11m, mud.

From a position approximately 3nm E of Punta Mayari Light, the approach leads S through the Outer Fairway to pass W of No 1 Lightbuoy which marks the outer end of the entrance channel, then: The entrance channel leads between buoys and light beacons (port and starboard hand). From the inshore end of the entrance channel the fairway, which has a least depth of 10.0m, leads W and is well marked by light beacons (red and green daymarks on concrete towers on piles with platforms).

Pilotage is compulsory. Pilots for Nicaro are based at Antilla and board vessels 0.8nm W of Punta Mayari (20°48'N 075°31'W) and are available throughout 24 hours. They await the arrival of vessels at Saetia (20°47'N 075° 34'W).

Towage is available from Antilla, compulsory for vessels over LOA 100m .

Radio: Customs Coast Radio Station "CLA CU" can be used for passing messages. The station operates throughout 24 hours. Inmarsat is the preferred method of communication and should be used to contact agents, whenever possible. VHF: Ch 16.

Initial ETA should be sent on departure from last port. If time permits, further ETA's should be sent 10, 7, 5, 3 and 1 day prior to arrival. The messages must include date and time of arrival and expected draughts on arrival.

Free pratique should be requested by radio. Health Certificates can be renewed by phytosanitary organisations.

Normally tendered when a vessel is alongside and ready to work cargo or on arrival at the outer roads of the port if no berth is available.
