Isabela de Sagua (CUIDS)

Imports are mainly general cargo; fertilisers and fibre. Exports are principally crude and refined sugar. The port is currently closed.

Isabela De Sagua is situated on the N coast of the island, E of Havana and is the port for the city of Sagua la Grande, 19km up river.

Canal Boca de Maravillas: Amezaga, LOA 100m, draught 6.9m. Alfert, LOA 170m, draught 6.1m.

Ingles Anchorage: (5.5nm ESE of Punta Practicos) provides anchorage for 9 vessels with a length of 190m. Depths 11 to 16m, sand and stone, good holding ground. Max draught 10.0m. Pancho Real Anchorage: (1nm ESE of Punta Practicos) provides anchorage for 15 vessels with a length of 180m. Depths 8 to 9m, sand and stones, good holding ground. Max draught 7.0m. Cayo Paloma Anchorage: (0.5nm SSW of Cayo Paloma (22°58'N 080°00'W)) provides anchorage for 6 vessels with a length of 120m. Depths 3.6 to 4.3m, mud, good holding ground. Max draught 4.4m. This is a waiting anchorage. Casa Blanca Anchorage: (1.5nm SSW of Punta Maravillas (Punta Mariales) (22° 59.0'N 079°58.5'W)) provides anchorage for up to 15 ships with a length of 180m. Depths 3.6 to 5.2m, mud, good holding. Max draught 5.0m.

The principal entrance channel to the port is Canal Boca de Maravillas a dredged channel 6nm in length. The port can also be approached by Pasa Boca de Canete and Pasa Boca del Seron which lead through the reefs SE of the main channel and Pasa Boca Ciega which lies to the NW. These secondary channels are only used by small craft and their navigation requires local knowledge. The channel is buoyed. Directions for entering harbour: From No1 Lightbuoy (port hand), 1.2nm E of Punta Practicos, the entrance channel leads generally S and SSW, its limits being marked by buoys and lightbuoys (port and starboard hand), the positions of which are best seen from the chart.

Pilotage is compulsory and available during daylight hours only for vessels proceeding into the entrance channel. Pilots embark 1.5nm NE of Cayo Cristo Light, which stands on Punta Practicos, 23°02.2'N 079°59.3'W. Pilots require 72 hours notice.

Including all anchorages, the entry channel and the port facilities SW of Punta Sotavento.

Speed limit in Canal Boca de Maravillas is 6kts.

Range 0.9m.

Available. For vessels greater than 90m LOA, when berthing, anchoring, manoeuvring and mooring at the buoys, at least 1 tug will be required.

Prevailing winds: E'ly. Isabela de Sagua is open to the NE. There are often heavy seas in Boca de Maravillas. At such times vessels of more than 3.7m draught may be unable to enter the channel.

Radio: Customs Coast Radio Station "CLA CU" can be used for passing messages. The station operates throughout 24 hours. Inmarsat is the preferred method of communication and should be used, to contact agents whenever possible. VHF: Port Control and pilots can be contacted on Ch 16.

Initial ETA should be sent on departure from last port. If time permits, further ETA's should be sent 10, 7, 5, 3 and 1 day prior to arrival. The messages must include date and time of arrival and expected draughts on arrival.

Free pratique should be requested by radio. Health Certificates can be renewed by phytosanitary organisations.

Normally tendered when a vessel is alongside and ready to work cargo or on arrival at the outer roads of the port if no berth is available.
