Nueva Gerona (CUGER)

The port handle bulk cargo for minerals product and grain and crude oil. There is a ferry terminal for vessels belonging to a local coastal passenger company. Other vessels load citrus fruit from lighters at anchorage.

Nueva Gerona is situated on the W bank of the River Las Casas, which flows into the sea near the Isle of Pinos on the North coast.

Vessels are permitted to load up to a draught of 5.79m and LOA 152m.

No 1 Anchorage, with depths of 6m is situated 1.7nm NE of the mouth of the river. Ten vessels with a draught of 5.6m may anchor in this anchorage.

The approach route to Nueva Gerona leads from Punta Frances and Ensenada Siguanea along the NW and N coast of Isla de la Juventud. Vessels with a draught of 5.6m can use this route. The entrance channel has a width of 3.2km.

Customs Coast Radio Station "CLA CU" can be used for passing messages. The station operates throughout 24 hours. Inmarsat is the preferred method of communication and should be used, to contact agents, whenever possible.

Initial ETA should be sent on departure from last port. If time permits, further ETA's should be sent 10, 7, 5, 3 and 1 day prior to arrival. The messages must include date and time of arrival and expected draughts on arrival.

Free pratique should be requested by radio. Health Certificates can be renewed by phytosanitary organisations.

Normally tendered when a vessel is alongside and ready to work cargo or on arrival at the outer roads of the port if no berth is available.
