Mokha (YEMOK)

The port consists of one pier, allowing vessels to berth either side. There are facilities in the port for the handling of break bulk, Ro-Ro and Palm Oil tanker cargoes. Principal export is mocca coffee.

Mokha is located at the southern entrance to the Red Sea, situated to the SE of Hodeidah.

LOA 180m, draught 8.0m and 15,000DWT(up to 20,000DWT accepted provided maximum draught 8.0m). Tanker berth: Max LOA 150m; draught 8.5m.

Approx 70 vessels visit the port annually.

Anchorage may be obtained in the vicinity of the roads, SW of the channel, in depths of 6.0-7.0m, sand and shell or farther offshore according to draught.

South Shoals, 2nm SSW of North Shoals, have a depth of 4.0m over them. Between South Shoals and the coastal bank is a channel, 0.5nm wide, with a depth 8.5m in the centre of the fairway. Al Mukha Leading Light Beacons are situated 0.2nm apart, the front standing 0.5nm SE of the breakwater light. In a line bearing 137° they lead through a buoyed channel, depth 7.8m, width 110m. Shoaling has been reported in the inner part of the channel. At its inner end is a turning area, 420m in diameter. Fairway Lightbuoy (safe water) is moored 1.3nm W of North Fort, 0.2nm NW of the outer end of the channel. The channel is marked at its outer and inner end by No 1 and No 3 Lightbuoys (starboard hand) and by No 2 and No 4 Lightbuoys (port hand). A stranded wreck (13°19.8'N 043°13.1'E) lies close E of No 2 Lightbuoy.

Compulsory. Pilot boards in the vicinity of the Fairway Light buoy (13°20.0'N 043°13.0'E).

Four floodlit towers, 30m in height standing on the jetty are visible for up to 20nm at night. Two groups of fuel tanks, 0.5nm S of the jetty. A minaret, 36m in height, situated 0.75nm SE of North Fort. A large power station with 4 tall chimneys, with power cables clearly visible extending E, stands on the coast 2.0nm NNE of North Fort. The power station and the power cables are radar conspicuous. Red lights are exhibited from the chimneys.

Care must be taken when navigating the approaches due to the existence of shoals and wrecks. Night navigation is not permitted. The port is exposed to the open sea and can be affected by weather conditions delaying berthing and sailing of vessels.

Mean spring range 0.5m; mean neap range negligible. Tidal stream: At springs there is often only 1 HW and 1 LW every 24 hours; at neaps there are 2 tides every 24 hours, but their times are irregular. The tidal streams set N with a rising tide and S with a falling tide, at rates of 1.0-2kts. The duration of the streams is much affected by winds. Close, inshore during strong winds, the S going stream often runs for 16 hours at a time, and the N going stream for 6-8 hours. In the deep water outside the shoals, the current sets N during winter and spring.

There are tugs available ranging from 700-2,500hp.

Prevailing winds: Variable. From May-Sept the winds are mainly light from the NW with occasional violent squalls and sandstorm's blowing off the land. Between Oct-Mar they are from SE, and Apr-May from the W. Occasional sandstorm's may occur in the afternoon and evening causing some haze; sandstorm's are more frequent during the months of Aug-Sep. Strong SW winds cause rough seas.
