Kalmar (SEKLR)

A well sheltered port suitably equipped to handle most types of cargoes and medium sized vessels, including cruise ships for which there are two berths. The port is never closed due to ice. There may, however, be difficulties during Jan-Mar. All ships bound inwards and outwards obtain free icebreaker assistance both in the port and in the Kalmarsund area close to the port. Exports: Grain, piece goods, sawn timber, forestry products and various bulk cargoes. Imports: Fodders, fertilisers, petroleum, iron products and various other bulk products.

Summer Zone for ships over 100m in length and Winter Zone for ships of 100m or less in length. Winter Nov 1 to Mar 31, Summer Apr 1 to Oct 31.

Kalmar is situated W of Oland Island on the Kalmarsund, in the Baltic Sea.

LOA 185m, beam 23m, draught 7.3m, 30,000DWT.

Anchorage may be obtained in the following areas: ..... 1. For vessels with draughts exceeding 6.0m in a position approx 1nm S of Tradgardsgrund Lightbuoy (56°37.6'N 016° 21.8'E), in depths of approx 12.0m, fine sand. A wreck with a depth of 7.9m over it lying 0.5nm S of the lightbuoy should be avoided. 2. In a position approx 0.5nm SSE of Grimskar Beacon (56°39.1'N 016°22.5'E), in a depth of approx 8.0-1.0m, clay. However, vessels should not anchor ENE of a line with the W point of Grimskar in line with Kalmar Water Tower bearing approx 335°. 3. In a position, approx 0.15-0.2nm NNE of Ombojningen Beacon (56°39.6'N 016° 23.1'E) in a depth of approx 6.5m, stone and clay. 4. In a position approx 0.2nm SW of Huvudet Lighthouse (56°40'N 016°23.3'E) in depths of 5.0-6.0m, clay. Caution: Anchorage is prohibited in the vicinity of the submarine power cables shown on the plan. (BA 2251, 3435 plan of Kalmarsund Inner Part, plan of Kalmar and the Narrows) Vessels of more than 7.0m draught, anchor S of Traedgaardsrund.

Kalmarsunds Djupranna, the dredged deepwater channel which has a bottom width of 80m and a least depth of 7.7m over a width of 60m, is marked on each side by lighthouses, lightbuoys, buoys and beacons. The main channels to Kalmar branch off from this channel. Caution: The lighthouses marking each side of the channel are so placed that their respective lights are positioned vertically directly above the edges of the channel. Their bases however, extend underwater into the channel for 5.0m and must not be passed at a distance of less than 10m. Vessels should note there are submarine power cables laid from the shore to Huvudet Light and then to Osvallsgrundet Light. Approach and entry: Approach: From S and N is through Kalmarsunds Djupranna, with short channel leading off from the main channel. From the S the max authorised draught is 7.3m and from the N, 6.8m. Entry: Oil Harbour: Entry to the oil harbour from the S is through a short channel dredged to a depth of 7.9m, authorised for a draught of 7.3m and marked by buoys (port hand), which leads N off Kalmarsunds Djupranna close inside its entrance at Skansgrundet Light. From the N follow the track, (authorised for a draught of 7.0m) to a position approx 0.1nm SE of the pilot lookout on the NE end of Tjarhovet, then SW to the berth. Entry: Main basin: From S follow the previous directions to a position approx 100m SW of Ombojningen Beacon, (56°39.6'N 016°23.1'E). Then to the alignment (277°) of Kalmar Leading Lights: Front light, (white triangle, black border on post), (56°39.8'N 016°22.3'E), exhibited from the W side of the harbour. Rear light, a similar structure, exhibited 50m W of the front light. This alignment leads 0.2nm W to the harbour entrance, passing N of the buoys (port hand) marking the limits of the dredged area off the NE and N corners of Tjarhovet and S of Inre Gillburen Lightbuoy, (starboard hand) which marks the N limit of the dredged area off the entrance. From the N follow the reverse of the previous directions to a position close S of Gillburn Lightbuoy (porthand), moored 0.25nm SSW of Huvudet Light, (56° 40.1'N 016°23.3'E), then follow the directions given above for the main basin. The entrance channel has a main basin in the E part of the harbour dredged to a depth of 7.7m. The harbour at Kalmar is sheltered on the SE by Tjarhovet, a mole extending in a NE direction and on the E by the N breakwater. From Kalmarsund Leading Lights lead to the harbour through a 7.7m depth entrance.

A linesman is compulsory for vessels exceeding LOA 80m.

Compulsory for all vessels over LOA 70m or width of 14m or draught of 4.5m, and all ships loaded with dangerous or polluting cargo. Requests for Kalmar pilots should be sent to Malmo VTS 24 hours prior to arrival. The pilot lookout and station is situated at the NE end of Tjarhovet. Pilot boards as follows: ..... 1. N entrance: Near Sillasen (56°46.3'N 016°30.5'E) or near NE of Krongrundet (56°41.7'N 016°24.6'E). 2. S entrance: (a) Near Tradgardsgrund (56°37.6'N 016°22.1'E). (b) Near Utgrinden (56°21.5'N 016°14.3'E).

Kalmar Cathedral, 56°39.9'N 016°22.1'E Cathedral with 4 towers, near the centre of Kvarnholmen. Kalmar Water Tower 56°39.8'N 016°21.8'E 400m WSW of the cathedral Steam Mill - With tall chimney, 300m E of the cathedral. Major Lights: Skansgrundet Light 56°39.1'N 016°22.7'E Black tower, green band, grey conical base, white lantern, 19m in height, floodlit. Krongrundet Light 56°41.4'N 016°24.5'E Black tower, white band, grey conical base, white lantern, 11m in height, floodlit. Berga Aero Light 56°41.7'N 016°20.5'E At an elevation of 71m, 1nm inland, 2nm N of Kalmar.

There are no known restrictions to vessel movements in the port.
