Ima Terminal (NGIMA)

The offshore terminal consists of FSO 'Ailsa Craig I' which exports crude oil in tandem with export tanker via a single 16in floating hose.

Tropical.

Ima Terminal lies about 12nm SSE of the W entrance to Andoni River in the Bight of Biafra.

Offshore: LOA 277m, draught 18.0m, 167,282DWT.

Anchoring within 3km of the exclusion zone surrounding the Facility is prohibited. If an Offtake Vessel cannot moor on arrival it should proceed to the anchorage area. A circle with radius 2.4km, centred at a point 5.6km SE of the FSO, defines this area. Masters of Offtake Vessels should anchor without the assistance of the pilot.

When within VHF communication range, Masters of Offtake Vessel should ascertain berthing instructions from the Facility on VHF channel 72.

The following lines are used forward: 200m x 25mm messenger line (typically blue colour) 150m x 72mm polyprop mooring line (typically orange colour) 10m x 72mm chafe chain 50m mooring hawser secured to the facility. A stern tug will make fast when the vessel is stationary in approach to terminal and will remain for static tow during the offtake operations.

Pilotage is compulsory. The Terminal Pilots, other personnel and equipment shall be transferred to the Offtake Vessel by either a Supply Boat or the Facility workboat. This is normally done when the Offtake Vessel reaches a distance of 3.2km from the Facility. For Offtake Vessels at anchor, the Terminal Pilots will board at anchorage. The Terminal Pilots shall remain on the Offtake Vessel for the time the Vessel is moored at the Facility. Pilotage services are provided strictly subject to the Terminal Conditions. All manoeuvring of the Offtake Vessel is to be done on advice from the Terminal Pilot. However, Masters of the Offtake Vessel shall remain solely responsible for the safe manoeuvring of their vessels.

Berthing operations are restricted to a daylight hours only. The latest time that mooring operations are commenced is 1600 hours local time. Unmooring can be conducted at any time.

Irregular, predominately ENE'ly, average NE'ly or SW'ly.

Tugs are available and essential for mooring.

Southwesterly to westerly winds predominate from May to September and are at their strongest average between 25 and 30 knots. From October to April the winds are variable and unpredictable in force and direction. From December to February winds are mainly from the north and their weakest average is 5 to 10 knots. Squalls of varying intensity are common between March and November. These squalls are unpredictable in force and direction and are accompanied by torrential rain, lighting, thunder and sudden shifts in wind direction. During these squalls winds of 55 to 60 knots have been recorded. Masters are therefore advised to keep a sharp look out for these unexpected changes in the weather conditions, keeping engines ready at all times to be able to leave berth under full power on short notice. Throughout the year a long low southwesterly swells prevails. During the wet season, June to October, this swell together with rough seas becomes high, particularly during heavy squalls. The rainfall is very heavy with a yearly average of about 3700mm (150 inches). There are basically two seasons, a wet season from March to September and a dry season from October to February. Visibility is good except during heavy rain and during the dry season, when the visibility occasionally drops to 4 to 5 cables.

Vessels should send ETA 72, 48, 24 and 12 hours in advance to the Terminal Manager and establish contact with the Terminal on VHF Ch 72 before arrival. The following information should be sent: ..... 1. Name of vessel and callsign 2. Fax No and satellite in use 3. Full name of Master 4. ETA at the terminal in local time (GMT+1) 5. Estimated arrival draught, forward and aft, displacement, departure draught 6. Last port of call, if vessel proceeding to any ports prior to IMA terminal 7. Confirm vessel has clean bill of health 8. No of bow stoppers and type 9. Cargo requirements, quantity of crude to be loaded 10. Max loading rate vessel can accept 11. Confirm 15t crane/derrick 12. Name of vessel's agent 13. Owners and operators name and address.

The Nigerian Health officer to be contacted at least 72 hours before arrival advising the following: ..... 1. Name of vessel and callsign 2. ETA at the terminal in local time (GMT+1) 3. Last port of call 4. Cargo requirements 5. Number of crew whether healthy or not 6. Whether or not doctor on board 6. Requesting free pratique. If the request for free practique is granted, the Port Health Officer will advice so by radio. If free practique has not been granted and radioed to the vessel, the yellow flag "Q" by day or red over white lights by night must be displayed on arrival at IMA Terminal.

Notice of Readiness should be tendered when offtake tanker within 2nm of the facility and in all respects ready to load.
