Nosy-Be (MGNOS)

Nosy Be is an alternative name for Andoany.

Andoany port (Hellville) is situated on Nosy Be Island, off the NW coast of Madagascar.

There are 2 anchorage berths in depths of 8.0-14.0m, for general cargo vessels and 1 anchorage berth in depths of 5.0-8.0m for tankers. The usual anchorage for ocean going vessels, with restricted swinging room of radius 300m, is in a depth of 16.0m, mud, on the leading lights, 450m SSE of the head of the mole. Tankers with cargoes for the oil terminal at Pointe du Cratere, but which are too large to berth at the terminal, anchor S of Pointe a la Fievre (0.5nm E of Andoany) in a depth of 14.0m. Small vessels can anchor in Baie d'Hellville (SSW of Andoany). This anchorage is a little more sheltered from the swell, but communication with Andoany is more difficult as boats have to round the S end of the reef which extends S of the town. There are also anchorages suitable for coasters: Approx 0.15nm off Andoany mole, in a depth of 9.0m, on the bearing 017° of the lights in line at the head of Anse du Plateau. There is good shelter from W winds here. As convenient in Anse des Antalaotra (1nm E of Andoany), off the village of Ambanoro. Anse du Cratere affords anchorage, 0.25nm E of the NE extremity of Pointe du Cratere in a depth of 17.0m, sheltered from W winds. The bearing 329° of a beacon (0.5nm N of the same point) leads to the berth.

Approach to Andoany is from the S, direct from sea, on the alignment of the leading lights.

Anse du Plateau Leading Lights: Front light; (white beacon, black stripe, 8m in height). Rear light; similar structure, 6m in height.

Mean spring range is 3.4m, mean neap range is 1.0m.

There are 2 small tugs, 1 x 180hp in bad condition and 1 x 120hp.

A swell is caused by WSW to W winds in the anchorage off Hellville, which is otherwise sheltered.
