Buchanan (LRUCN)

Buchanan is an important ore export terminal. The port itself is formed by 2 breakwaters, main and secondary. The commercial berth is situated on the secondary breakwater, and the ore berth on the shore, protected by the main breakwater. During the dry season mid-sized vessels are loaded with up to 60,000t of ore to be transferred on to waiting Capesize vessels that carry up to 200,000t.

Buchanan is situated approx 90km SE of Monrovia.

Max LOA 290m; draught 12.8m; 120,000DWT.

Can be obtained 1.5nm W of the head of the main breakwater in a depth of approx 20.0m. Anchorage can also be obtained approx 0.55nm NW of the head of the main breakwater in a depth of 16.0m.

The main breakwater extends 0.9nm W from the shore 1.25nm SE of Grand Bassa Point and the secondary breakwater extends S from the shore 0.5nm SE of Grand Bassa Point. A light is exhibited from white square concrete towers standing at the heads of both breakwaters. The towers are floodlit at night.

Compulsory. Pilot boards in the vicinity of the 2 entrance buoys. At least 96 hours notice of arrival should be given.

Ore vessels are berthed at any time, general cargo vessels between 0700-2300hrs.

There are 2 tugs, 1,640hp and 3,300hp available.
