Mukho (KRMUK)

Mukho is protected by a breakwater and a groyne. The N breakwater is approx 1,074m in length lying SE'ly. The groyne is approx 200m, running E from the W side of the port. Mukho's main exports are anthracite, coal, graphite and cement. Mukho has merged traffic figures with Donghae. (See also Donghae port information).

Mukho is situated on the E coast of Korea, approx 25km N of Samchok.

LOA 133m, beam 23.6m, draught 7.9m, 8,572DWT.

Approx 34,000,000t (merged traffic figure with Donghae) of cargo handled annually.

Outer anchorage: There are five designated anchorages outside the E breakwater, but with little shelter, in depths of 11.0-25.0m. The anchorages are as follows: A1, A2 and A3, for vessels of 5,000t or less. B1 and B2, for vessels between 5,000t and 10,000t. Care should be taken, when using A1 and A2 anchorages, to avoid a rocky shoal, with depths of 8.1m, lying 0.5nm NNE of the head of the E breakwater.

Mukho has no approach channels but the entrance to Mukho harbour is approx 230m in width and 8.5-11.9m in depth. Vessels should keep to the middle of the fairway when entering the harbour. A red light is positioned at the head of the mouth of breakwater (37°32.26'N 129°07.17'E) and a green light is provided at the head of the S breakwater. All vessels entering or departing to and from Mukho harbour should pass the entrance channel which is limited by the following points: ..... Compulsory. The pilot boards at the quarantine anchorage (37°32.7'N 129° 09.0'E), 0.6nm ESE of the head of the E breakwater. Pilots are available from 0500-2200hrs.

The harbour limits are lines drawn from a position 0.2nm NE of Mugho Light (37° 33.1'N 129°7.2'E) E for 0.75nm, then S for 1.2nm, then W to the shore.

Lights are exhibited from both breakwater heads as follows: W breakwater head: White square metal tower, 3.0m in height. E breakwater head: Red square metal tower, 3.0m in height. A lighthouse with siren (Fl 10s 79m 23M) in position 37°33.5'N 129°07.1'E.

Owing to limited manoeuvring room, vessels should not leave or enter with winds exceeding 10kts. The berthing of vessels is limited to the hours from sunrise to sunset due to quarantine difficulties at night time.

Range 0.6m.

The Donghae VTS Service Zone is contained within a line joining the following positions: 37°41.17'N 129°02.48'E 37°42.33'N 129°09.97'E 37°24.55'N 129°21.35'E 37°22.00'N 129°15.08'E. Compulsory for the following: ..... 1. Passenger vessels 2. Vessels over 300GT 3. All vessels carrying dangerous cargo 4. Towing vessels over LOA 200m 5. Other vessels as designated by the VTS Reporting: Vessels must report on VHF Ch 12 as follows: 1. Pre-entry report: 2-1 hours before arrival, stating: Vessel's name and callsign Destination and ETA Departure port Type of cargo and tonnage Other safety related information 2. Entry Report: When 2nm from port limits 3. Arrival Report: On arrival at berth or anchorage 4. Pre-Movement Report: 10 minutes prior to movement 5. Movement Report: On movement and after movement 6. Pre-Departure Report: 10 minutes prior to departure 7. Departure Report: Upon departing. Same as Pre-entry Report. Vessels must maintain a continuous listening watch on VHF Ch 16 whilst within the VTS area. Vessels should immediately report any dangers to navigation or safety whilst within the VTS area.

One tug is available, 1 x 1,000hp.

Prevailing winds: W'ly. Dense fogs frequently occur from mid May to mid Jul, sometimes with deteriorating visibility of less than 100m, although it tends to die out quickly.
