Port Antonio (JMPOT)

Port Antonio is an important banana exporting port and is mainly used by reefer vessels and cruise ships. The port comprise E and W Harbours, However, the E Harbour has been closed for commercial use and is now a private marina. The West Harbour comprise the Ken Wright Pier and Boundbrook wharf.

Port Antonio is situated on the N coast of Jamaica, approx 19nm NW of Morant Point.

LOA 167m, max draught 7.9m.

Anchorage points: East Harbour: Anchorage with depths of 9.0-22.0m in position 17°51.4'N 076° 26.78'W. This anchorage is for vessels not exceeding LOA 152m, draught 7.9m. Outer anchorage: "Mohawk", 2,300t, anchored in position 341°, 0.83nm from Old Fort Point, depth 22.0m, hard coral. Prohibited anchorage: Vessels may only anchor in the W harbour with the permission of the harbour master.

Depths are 36.5m at the entrance, falling to 9.14m at 0.25nm offshore at the head of the harbour. West Harbour: From a position approx 1nm NNE of Old Fort Point the route leads approx 205° passing Folly Point at a distance of a little more than 0.12nm, then as requisite to follow the leading line (248.75°). The alignment (248.75°) of leading light beacons leads through the narrow channel S of Navy Island into West Harbour: Direction for leaving West Harbour: The alignment (68.75°) of a pair of leading light beacons (light exhibited when required) on Folly Point leads along the reciprocal of the entry transit S of Navy Island. Front Light Beacon (white, 8m in height) (0.6nm WSW of Old Fort Point). Rear Light Beacon (white, 6m in height) (0.7nm WSW of the front light). The channel is marked by light beacons and lightbuoys, which leads to a turning circle for vessels wishing to use the Ken Wright Pier and Boundbrook Wharf. There is swinging room for one vessel with a max LOA 152m, draught 8.5m. Care is necessary owing to the narrowness of the channel and to the possibility of a slight set from East Harbour towards Navy Island Reef. Caution: Hazards to shipping: Reefs extend 0.1nm W from Folly Point and 0.45nm E from One Bush Point.

Pilotage is compulsory and is available throughout 24 hours. Vessels should send ETA with request for pilot at least 24 hours in advance through agent. Pilot from Kingston boards vessel 1nm off Folly Point Light.

Major light: Folly Point Light (0.5nm NE), obscured from E by Wood Islet. Front Light Beacon (white, 8.0m in height) 0.6nm WSW of Old Fort Point. Rear Light Beacon (white, 6.0m in height) 0.7nm WSW of the front light.
