Salt River (JMSRI)

The port is reportedly closed to commercial shipping and navigation aids are not maintained. The port which mainly handled bulk sugar via lighters is now used by a limited number of small pleasure craft.

Salt River is situated between Salt Island and the mouth of the Salt River on the S coast of Jamaica.

Inner Anchorage: LOA 183m, draught 8.5m. Outer Anchorage: LOA unlimited, draught 9.7m.

Anchorage is available under the lee of Salt Island in depths of 5.0-9.0m, on good holding ground of fine grey sand over mud. Care must be taken to avoid the reefs, which are usually visible in daylight, off Burial Ground Point (W) and Long Island (NNW).

The river, with depths less than 2.0m is navigable to boats and lighters for approx 0.6nm upstream.
