Gallipoli (ITGAL)

The port of Gallipoli has been characterised for some years by a gradual development of mercantile traffic. The recent enlargement of the mercantile dock, with extension work on the quay and dredging of the depth, has attracted renewed interest by national and international maritime companies so that the port has started to provide a platform for commercial traffic in the lower region of Salento.

Gallipoli is situated on the E coast of the Gulf of Taranto, on an island linked to the mainland by a bridge.

Available in North Bay and South Bay. Before anchoring, call Gallipoli Harbour Master by radio on VHF Ch 16.

Secca del Rafo Lightbuoy is positioned outside the harbour, on the left of the green entrance light, 300m from the dock. Caution: It is advisable to pass far to seaward of the coastal section between Capo Santa Maria di Leuca and Porto di Gallipoli during the fishing season (Apr-Oct) in order to avoid areas covered by moored pots; in particular on Banco La Scala.

Contact the Gallipoli Harbour Master before vessel arrives at the entrance to the harbour.

Pilot service and mooring linesmen are compulsory for all vessels over 500GT, available throughout 24 hours. Pilotage should be requested 12 hours prior to arrival. Pilot boards at the entrance to the harbour, Harbour Pilot, Mr De Santis, Tel: +39 0833 201241.

Port limits extend 0.3nm NW from the port entrance, where there are red and green entrance lights.

No berthing/unberthing of dangerous cargoes at night.

Range 0.3-0.5m. Currents: Currents in this locality depend generally on the direction of the wind and vary in rate. They are also felt in the harbour. The strongest current is that caused by SW winds which sets up silting in the harbour.

Traffic schemes have not been adopted.

Tugs are not available in the port but can be ordered from Taranto.

Customs and immigration requirements are in accordance with European regulations. The customs office is located in the harbour. Immigration is handled by the frontier police.

Should be advised to harbour master 24 hours prior to arrival and pilots 12 hours prior to arrival.

Regulations concerning entry: Vessels which are carrying, or which have carried, dangerous or polluting cargoes in a liquid or gaseous state, are prohibited from navigating, other than for force majeure, within the coastal zone extending 3nm from the coast, within the jurisdiction of the Maritime Navigation Officer of Gallipoli. All vessels must observe the International Regulations for the Prevention of Collisions at Sea and must report their positions as opportune during entry, departure and when berthed. Stopping and anchoring by vessels at a distance of less than 1nm from the light at the head of Molo di Tramontana is prohibited.
