Gela (ITGEA)

Gela has an oil terminal which lies 1 mile SE of this small harbour and consists of a jetty, with two berths; a detached breakwater, with six tanker berths; a pier, with two chemical berths and an offshore buoy berth for tankers.

All ship's above 500DWT and all vessels used for dangerous cargoes must use the Port "Gruppo Ormeggiatori" for mooring and unmooring operations and various movements along the same dock. Other vessels can moor and unmoor without using the Port "Gruppo Ormeggiatori" only if the equipment onboard is used without the safety of the ship and crew being compromised. Vessels must be equipped with self tensioning mooring winches. Mooring ropes or wires SWL must not be less than 72t.

Compulsory for tankers and all vessels of 500GT and over. Vessels should send ETA 24 hours and 2 hours in advance. Berthing is during daylight hours and unberthing is throughout 24 hours. Messages can be sent through Roma (IAR). Pilot boards 1nm WSW of the W end of the breakwater, or 1nm SSE of its E end. Vessels anchoring must be accompanied by a pilot.

A light is exhibited from a column, 5m in height, standing on a pedestal at the heads of each of the E and W moles. The column on the E mole has black and white bands and that on the W mole has red and white bands. Three flares burn within the Raffineria di Gela, situated ESE of Gela and another 3 flares, conspicuous day and night, burn from a framework structure, 45m in height, red and white, situated close inshore, S of the refinery.

There are tugs available. Vessels using tugs within the sea area bounded by the meridians of 014°13'E and 014°18'E and the parallel of 37°00'N must use the port of Gela tug service. Towage is carried out by Societa Concessionaria Siciliana Salvataggi SpA with 3 tugs of no less than 1,500hp.

The customs allowance is 50 cigarettes if vessel is from a foreign country. Fines will be imposed for non-compliance depending on the excess quantity. Immigration release passes are issued to people going ashore.

Two copies of standard forms are required as for all Italian ports. A Tanker Check List is to be delivered by agent on arrival.

Should be advised 72, 48 and 24 and 2 hours prior to arrival to Raffineria di Gela, Gela. Message should include whether ballast and/or slop is to be discharged or cargo loaded on arrival of vessel. ETA for pilotage should be sent 24 and 2 hour in advance.

Authorisation is required from the harbour master prior to commercial operations commencing. Tankers carrying hydrocarbons, noxious liquid substances or dangerous liquid chemicals are prohibited from stopping either within or outside the roads for undertaking storage operations. When in harbour, tankers should maintain a constant watch on VHF.

Pratique should be applied for when health officers board the vessel. If vessel is from a cholera infected country, 24 hours notice must be given. Ship Sanitation Control Certificate and Exemption Certificates can be renewed.
