Vazhinjam (INVZJ)

The port handles containers.

Vizhinjam is located in India in the state of Kerala, at 16km South of State Capital, Thiruvananthapuram which falls in close proximity in the international East-West shipping route.

Loa 400m, beam 59m, draught 16m, 165,000DWT.

On completion of Phase 3 of the master plan, the port is predicted to handle approx. 3,350,000TEUs per annum. Cruise vessel calls are also forecast at approx. 120 per annum.

The port approach channel, once completed, will consist of two parts; the outer approach channel, which will be the section of the channel located outside the breakwaters, and the inner approach area, which will be the section of the channel from the head of the breakwaters to the vessel turning area. The outer approach channel will be unprotected with vessels in transit along this particular section sailing under their own power without tug assistance. The inner approach channel will be protected and fairly sheltered from wave attacks. Tugs will be able to meet vessels before they enter the turning basin and begin manoeuvres towards their allocated berth.

Once port developments are completed, vessels arriving at and departing the port will take on local pilots for transit between fairway buoy and berths. Pilots will need to board and disembark vessels in the open sea as long as waves do not exceed 2.5m.

Average annual rainfall 1,800mm. Rainfall occurs from SW monsoon during the period between June to September as well as the NE monsoons which impact the coastal area in October.
