Allepey (INALF)

The port is currently closed for commercial operations. Information for the port is retained should the port reopen. Allepey has one pier as well as lighters to work cargo. Whilst the off lying sand banks offer some shelter from the prevailing winds, the port may be closed during Apr, May, Jun, Oct and Nov due to SW'lies. Exports include coir and its products, copra and ginger; principal imports are salt, grain, metals and piece goods.

Allepey also known as Alappuzha is situated in Kerala State, South of Cochin in SW India.

During the NE monsoon, vessels of moderate size can obtain anchorage off Allepey with the lighthouse bearing 077° distant 2nm, in depths of approx 8.0m but sounding is essential as the mud bank shifts frequently so that depths are not reliable. During the SW monsoon, the best anchorage is farther offshore with the lighthouse bearing 056° in a depth of approx 9.0m, but this anchorage depends upon the position of the mud bank which cannot be determined until after the monsoon.

The boundary of the port is marked at its shoreward end by a pillar, 9.0m in height, standing 0.3nm N of the inshore end of the pier and a position 0.6nm SSE of the same point. The port area is contained by a line joining the points, by lines drawn W and in a general WSW direction from the N and S points respectively to 12.8m depths and, at the seaward end, by a line joining these points.

Allepey Light is exhibited from a white round masonry tower 0.25nm E of the shore end of Allepey Pier. As Allepey town is difficult to distinguish from seaward it is advisable to make a landfall while it is still dark to ensure identifying the lighthouse. A tall radio mast stands approx 4nm N of Allepey Light. The mast exhibits several red lights at night, displayed vertically; its position is approx.

The port is on the SW coast of India; connected by canal with Vembanad Lagoon. Anchorage in approx 9-13m, 1.5-2nm offshore; mud bottom. Depth of water unreliable owing to shifting of mud bank; use of lead necessary in approaches.

Nil. Current at the anchorage sets S with a rate up to 2kts; from Oct-Feb, a N going set, usually weak, is sometimes experienced.

Customs allowances: One bottle of liquor and one carton of cigarettes is allowed for each crew member per week. Immigration: Officials will check passports/CDC (Seaman's Books) and issue shore permits. Nationals from Sri Lanka, Pakistan, Bangladesh and China (mainland) will not be issued with landing permits.

Local port health officer grants pratique after boarding vessel.

To be tendered as per terms and conditions of Charter Party. Generally, NOR tendered by master on vessel's arrival advising that vessel is ready to load/discharge the nominated cargo.
