Azhikkal is a river port at the mouth of the Valapattanam River, 7km from Kannur (Cannanore), which runs from the Western Ghats into the Indian Ocean, the longest river in the Kannur district, Kerrala state, SW India.

Anchorage area may be obtained about 2.5 miles WSW of the entrance to Valapattanam River in depths of approx 10m.

The depth is above 4m throughout the 4.5km channel except for a small patch of 3.2m in the outer channel and the berth area.

Admiralty Pilot NP38.

The port limits defining the N and S of the port stand on the coast approx 1.5 miles NW and 7 cables SE of the river mouth. The W limit is about 7 miles seaward of the coast.

The average maximum and minimum tidal ranges are about 1.43m and 0.518m by semi diurnal tides with a period of 12 hours and 40 minutes. Currents along the coast line are moderate not exceeding 1 knot, the direction being towards S in Febuary to October and towards N in November to January. During SW monsoons, there is heavy discharge from Valapattanam River and water velocity in river is reported to reach about 7 knots.

One tug available.

Generally humid with wet and dry seasons. Temperatures range between 21°-32°C. Rainfall from SW monsoons on Jun-Sep 3,000mm annually. The winds are calm to moderate in the range of 6 to 11 km/h during morning hours and in the range of 12 to 20 km/h in the evening hours. However, wind velocities of nearly 100 km/h are experienced during SW monsoons.
