Alang (INALA)

The port is solely concerned with ship breaking. Ships are beached for breaking twice a month at HW of over 10.0m. It is considered to be one of the world's main ship breaking areas.

Alang is situated on the W coast of India in the Gulf of Cambay, approx 50km from Bhavnagar by road.

There is no restriction on length, beam or draught of a vessel calling at Alang for demolition.

Approx 140 vessels are scrapped annually totalling 2,600,000t.

Alang is an open anchorage area with the arrival anchorage being positioned 5nm SSW of Piram Lighthouse for vessels up to 12.0m draught. Arrival to be informed to Bhavnagar Radio on VHF Ch 16 and also to agent on same channel. Local knowledge is essential before approaching the anchorage.

Vessels are beached during high water over 10.0m.

Pilotage is not compulsory.

The current speed is 3.5knots.

The master must prepare 6 copies each of the following documents for customs: ..... 1. Crew List 2. Crew's Personal Effects Declaration 3. Crew Currency Declaration 4. Ship Stores Declaration 5. Engine Stores List 6. Deck Stores List 7. Electrical Stores List 8. Radio Equipment List (with serial numbers), 9. Chief Steward Stores List 10. Navigation Equipment List 11. Pyrotechnics Items' List 12. Ship Provision Stores List 13. Last 5 Cargoes & Last 5 Ports' Declaration All bonded stores are required to be declared to customs (via agent or Bhavnagar Radio) upon arrival and are to be surrendered to the customs' boarding party. The same must be declared correctly and nothing consumed from the declared list to avoid any complication. However, 1 bottle of liquor and 1 carton of cigarettes can be issued to each crew member for consumption prior to beaching and same need not be declared in the Bonded Stores List. All pyrotechnics (line throwing apparatus, gun, rockets, hand flares, smoke signals, etc) Items' Lists need to be prepared with utmost care and all declared items to be kept separately and to be brought down with disembarking crew for surrender to police department. Any change in the declared list may lead to problems with police/customs, so utmost care must be taken. The following are also required. 1. ETA Alang 2. Vessel's flag 3. Copy of Registry Certificate 4. Crew List 5. Vessel's Satcom number 6. Last Port of Call 7. Copy of the Memorandum of Agreement 8. Buyers' agents' style.

Demolition: Vessels for demolition must arrive cargo free.
