The port has modern facilities. Although the port was initially planned and constructed for handling dry bulk cargo and containerised cargo, the port facilities have been upgraded for handling containers, vehicles, cement, project cargoes and liquid bulk cargoes of "B" & "C" class.

Jawaharlal Nehru Port (Jawahar Lal Nehru) is situated along the eastern shore of Mumbai harbour, SE of Elephanta Island.

LOA 366.46m, draught 16.5m, beam 51.2, 204,738DWT.

Approx 83,000,000t of cargo, 6,000,000TEU, and 2,800 vessels handled annually.

An anchorage lies at west end of Panvel Creek (18°58.5'N 072.58.0'E). Marked by lightbuoys and is available for vessels up to LOA 180m, draught 7.0-8.5m, depth dredged to 13m.

The port shares a common channel with Mumbai port to the point of access to the South Elephanta Channel. The navigational channel is buoyed and two transit lights mark the centre of the approach channel, permitting night navigation. The port has undergone a substantial dredging programme to accommodate much larger vessels of up to 12,500TEU and will shortly officially announce that the JNP Approach Channel has been lengthened from 33.5km to 35.5km. At the same time, this Channel's depth has been increased from 14m to 15m and the channel width from 370m to 450m. However, the Harbour Master should always be contacted for the latest information on this Channel and alongside depths. Approaches: The channel, turning circle and anchorage area are marked by lightbuoys. Leading Lights: From the turning basin, S of Butcher Light Beacon, leading lights exhibited on Shiva Island, in line bearing 085°, lead to a position W of the Sheva Beacon.

1012-1024. Jawaharlal Nehru port is essentially a salt water port and major fluctuation in the density occurs on account of seasons. Density varies mostly in the monsoon period from June to September. Sea water temperature is 18°-23° throughout the year.

Vessel Berthing Regulations are produced by the Port and may change from time to time. The port should be contacted for the latest version of these. New Berthing guidelines: Superseding all other circulars: ..... 1. Shallow water berth: a. Vessels shall berth/unberth only during flood tide. b. Car carriers shall not be berthed during monsoon. 2. CB1, CB2, CB3, CB4, CB5 a. Vessels over LOA 250m shall be turned around during daylight hours only. These vessels shall berth only port side alongside during the monsoon period. b. Vessels over LOA 270m shall preferably be berthed at CB1 and CB5. These vessels can be berthed at other berths subject to having an unoccupied berth length of minimum 150m at the forward end, that is Northwards, if starboard side alongside or Southwards if vessel is scheduled to berth port side to. These vessels shall berth and unberth with fully operational bow thrusters. 3. General: a. During monsoon extra lines shall be used for mooring. b. Dock density varies from 1012-1024, masters should take note of this when declaring arrival draught. c. Turning around to facilitate night sailing shall be on agent's account. d. Minimum space between vessels shall not be less than 25m.

Pilotage is compulsory for all vessels exceeding 200GT and is available throughout 24 hours. Inbound vessels are required to contact "Jawaharlal Port Control" on VHF Ch 13 and VTS Mumbai, ie, Mumbai Port on VHF Ch 12 to report ETA and receive instructions. Vessels must not proceed beyond E of Long 072°44'E without being instructed to do so. Pilot will embark by a pilot launch, black hull and green superstructure with the legend "Pilot" on the side, in position 1.7nm SE of Prongs Reef Lighthouse. The pilot launch is equipped with VHF Ch 13, radar and searchlight and displays the usual pilot jack during daylight hours and pilot lights at night. In monsoon conditions pilot boards inside the channel. Whilst Jawaharlal Nehru Port pilot may give advice and communicate directly on VHF Ch 13 to incoming vessels, overall co-ordination of shipping at pilotage ground rests with the Mumbai VTS. During the SW monsoon season, a long swell prevails at the port entrance and the pilot launch may experience difficulties in coming alongside. At such times, masters may be instructed to steam to a position approx 1nm SE of Sunk Rock Lighthouse, where a better lee is obtained. Masters will be advised which side to make a lee by the pilot, for incoming vessels it is usually starboard side.

A vessel is considered arrived when pilot has embarked and/or when vessel has anchored at outer roads.

Sheva Island Leading Lights, in an alignment of 084°, in the following positions: Front Light 18° 56.71'N 72° 56.32'E on BPCL Jetty and Rear Light (Approx 1.1nm mile from the Front Light). Red building with dome (18° 55.87'N 72° 57.51'E).

..... 1. Berthing/unberthing shall be restricted when wind exceeds 20kts and may be suspended if wind exceeds 25kts. 2. Night time turning around is not permitted for vessels more than LOA 270m and 12.0m draught. 3. During monsoon, vessels over LOA 270m shall not be permitted to sail with draught more than 12m.

In conjunction with Mumbai Port a VTMS system is in operation with terminals at both ports. All vessels must contact both Mumbai VTMS on VHF Ch 12 and Jawaharlal Nehru Port on VHF Ch 13 when arriving within a radius of 24nm from Prongs Light. Vessels over 200GT or more should report to VTMS stating their ETA and time of arrival at the outer road. In addition to reporting, vessels must maintain a continuous listening watch on Ch 13 and also Ch 12 on the approach. All vessels in the inner anchorage area must maintain a continuous listening watch on Ch 13.

Every vessel must have statutory registration with customs prior to or on arrival, declaring Crew and Cargo Manifest, etc. Vessels leaving port have to obtain port clearance from customs. Customs allowances: Crew members are allowed 1 bottle of liquor and I carton of cigarettes per week. Crew members are allowed 1 bottle of spirit (1,000ml) and 200 cigarettes. Any quantities carried by the vessel are to be declared by the master on the Stores List. These are to be kept under customs seal until the vessel departs.

Agents to submit 'VIA" form 3 days prior to the vessel's arrival to the Central Documentation Centre at Port Users Building, Sheva. The Berthing Application is to be submitted to the deputy conservator's office 12 hours in advance of the vessel's berthing schedule. The master is to deliver to the customs boarding party: ..... All vessels should send ETA at least 48 hours prior to arrival at outer roads to the deputy conservator (JNPT), the following information should be included in the message: ..... 1. Vessel's name 2. Name of Master 3. Port of Registry 4. Last port of call 5. LOA 6. GT 7. Type of vessel 8. Max draught in metres 9. Class of dangerous cargoes 10. Any defects in engine, steering, radar, etc Vessels should confirm ETA on VHF Ch 13 at least 3 hours prior to arrival. The general declaration form is to be submitted by the agents 48 hours prior to arrival of the vessel. All vessels entering the port must have a valid P & I cover or an equivalent cover. A certificate of entry of the vessel should be submitted to the port by the agent. Any vessel which does not have cover will be denied entry. All vessels to which the ISM Code applies should be in possession of a valid Document of Compliance (DOC) and Safety Management Certificate (SMC). All vessels should hold valid statutory certificates.

Hazardous cargo: All hazardous cargo except for IMDG Class 1 is allowed to be landed/loaded in containerised form at JNP container berths. Vessels with Class 1 are not permitted in port. Masters of vessels carrying dangerous cargo in containers must arrange to submit Dangerous Cargo Manifest to the deputy conservator of JNP and the terminal. Guidelines for oil tankers' entry: The possible environmental hazard from sub-standard foreign flag oil tankers calling at Indian ports has been engaging the attention of the DG Shipping. It has therefore become necessary to tighten the inspection campaign of oil tankers, regardless of their age, in order to check entry of sub-standard tankers within the port limits. In view of this, it has been decided by the DG Shipping that following minimum guidelines need to be adhered to by foreign flag oil tankers: ..... 1. All tankers with SBT/Chemical Tankers shall be below 25 years of age. 2. All tankers must be classed with a major IACS Society or the Indian Register of Shipping. 3. All tankers above 20 years must have at least Conditional Assessment Programme (CAP) 2 rating (hull, machinery and cargo equipment) from IACS.

"Quarantine Mumbai" should be advised 24 hours prior to arrival using the standard form of message. Free pratique will be granted by the quarantine authority if the vessel arrives from a yellow fever area or it will be granted by the pilot. The port health authorities require valid smallpox and cholera certificates for arrivals from foreign countries and also valid yellow fever certificates for arrivals from yellow fever areas. Ship Sanitation Control Certificate and Exemption Certificates issued.

To be tendered as per terms and conditions of Charter Party. Generally, NOR tendered by master on vessel's arrival advising that vessel is ready to load/discharge the nominated cargo.

Vessel's ETA and time of anchoring at outer roads is to be reported to Jawahar Port Control, via VHF Ch 13.
