New Mangalore (INNML)

The port mainly handles general cargo, coal, iron ore, cements, passengers, dry bulk, containers, chemicals, vegetable oils, crude, clean products, dirty products and LPG.

New Mangalore is situated on the W coast of India in the state of Karnataka, 170nm S of Mormugao and 191nm N of Kochi.

Harbour: LOA 292m, draught 14.0m, beam 48m, 181,415DWT. Offshore: LOA 339.5, draught 21m, 321,039DWT.

Approx 46,000,000t of cargo, 200,000TEU and 1,500 vessels handled annually.

Anchorage may be obtained 2nm to the N to NW side of Fairway Buoy in approx 16.0-18.0m depth. Vessels anchoring should keep well clear of the dangerous wreck lying S of the anchorage, and the shoal water in the bar.

The port is approached by a channel 4nm in length and 245m wide maintained, by dredging to a depth of 15.4m, catering to a maximum vessel draught of 14.0m. Note: During monsoons the maximum draught may be reduced due to siltation, this will be notified in advance by the port authority. The channel is marked by lightbuoys (port and starboard hand) in accordance with the IALA "A" Buoyage System. The channel is entered 0.4nm E of the Fairway Lightbuoy (safe water) (12°55.0'N 074°45.2'E) and passes N of the following dangers (positioned from the Fairway Lightbuoy): ..... A stranded wreck 0.9nm ESE Several shoal patches between 1.25 and 1.5nm E (least depth 7.5m) A dangerous wreck 2nm E Within the harbour, E of No 11 and 12 Lightbuoys and including the turning circle, (490m diameter) the maintained depth is reduced to15.1m. The N limit of the dredged area is a line drawn between No 12 Lightbuoy to the edge of the turning circle in position 12°55.6'N 074°48.8'E, then to the shore in position 12°55.7'N 074°49.0'E. Immediately E and SW of the turning circle the maintained depth is 14.0m. Near the head of the harbour a basin, 595m in length and 200m wide, leads N from the main harbour, within which the depth varies from 9.5-10.5m.

On all tanker terminals vessels can provide mooring wires/ropes. All other vessels must provide synthetic ropes for mooring on cargo berths, (from Berth No 1 to Berth No 9 and Berth No 14). Virtual Jetty: This jetty has been decommissioned.

Pilotage is compulsory for vessels over 200GT and is available 24 hours a day. Continuous watch is kept on VHF Ch 16, pilot boat on Ch 12. The pilot embarks 0.5nm from the Fairway Lightbuoy (12°54.5'N 074°45.2'E) in good weather; nearer to breakwater in channel in rough weather. Vessels up to LOA 245m are handled on a 24 hour basis; longer vessels including Suezmax tankers are handled during daylight hours only. For vessels with a maximum draught up to 10.0m the pilot will board 1.25nm ENE of Fairway Lightbuoy, and for vessels with a draught in excess of 10.0m the pilot will board 0.25nm NW of the lightbuoy. Deep draught vessels, over 10.0m 12°54.95'N 074°44.28'E Vessels maximum draught 10.0m 12°55.23'N 074°45.55'E Pilot boarding guidelines for timber carriers: New Mangalore Port Trust has issued instructions to ensure the safety of pilots boarding timber carriers with deck cargo. In its circular the Port Trust states: It is observed that the timber carriers with deck cargo calling at New Mangalore Port do not provide safe pilot boarding arrangement. As a result, pilot is subjected to undue risk, which may cause serious injury and even loss of life. Therefore, timber carriers calling at NMPT are required to abide by the following guidelines regarding pilot boarding arrangement. ..... 1. Pilot ladder of approved type complying with SOLAS requirement shall be rigged close to midship area of the vessel so that all the steps of the ladder rest firmly against the ship side along with two man ropes of suitable diameter made of natural fibre rope. 2. Clear walkway, as specified in the International Load Line Regulations for timber ships 1966, shall be provided to lead the pilot safely to the accommodation of the vessel from the boarding point. The above guidelines shall be strictly adhered to, failing which vessel shall not be permitted to pick up the pilot. On arrival at NMPT roads, vessel is required to confirm to the Port Control regarding her compliance with the above pilot boarding arrangement.

Landmarks: Water tower 12°55.0'N 074°48.7'E Signal tower 12°55.8'N 074°48.5'E Fertiliser tower 12°56.1'N 074°49.4'E Water tower 12°56.3'N 074°49.4'E Water tower 12°56.6'N 074°49.2'E Useful marks: Oil tank 12°55.3'N 074°48.6'E Lattice radio tower 12°56.0'N 074°49.2'E Pillars: there are several pillars to aid fixing, turning or berthing; which stand near the coast, on the breakwater and in the vicinity of the harbour.

The maximum permissible draught is 14.0m. Berthing is available throughout 24 hours. The latest port circular restrictions should be followed - current monsoon draught restriction is 13.25m with 1m height of tide (07/12).

The port is subject to semi diurnal tidal variation with the tidal range of about 1.75m.

A new Vessel Traffic Management System is in operation. All vessels entering the port will be identified without the need for communication. The system allows remote vessel guidance from a distance of 4nm to the inner harbour.

There are 6 bollard pull tugs are available but not provided with towing line, ships ropes are required to make fast the tug.

Prevailing winds: SW'ly and NW'ly monsoon. Visibility: Haze settles over the land after sunrise, even in the fine season the coast usually remains indistinct until mid-day, making it difficult to discern objects otherwise conspicuous.

Should be advised at least 48 hours in advance, stating the vessel's name and nationality, callsign, draught (fore and aft), LOA, GT, NT and last port of call. ETA should be confirmed at least 2 hours in advance to port control. All vessels calling at New Mangalore port must submit following information at least 24 hours in advance of scheduled time of arrival to the deputy conservator/port facility security officer. ..... 1. Names of at least 10 ports of calls where interface with port or ship took place. 4. Local port health officer grants pratique after boarding vessel. Pratique can be applied for by radio, via agents. The granting of free pratique is not required if already granted by another Indian port.

To be tendered as per terms and conditions of Charter Party. Generally, NOR tendered by master on vessel's arrival advising that vessel is ready to load/discharge the nominated cargo.
