Lhokseumawe (IDLSW)

The port is currently closed for commercial operations. Information for the port is retained should the port reopen. Tsunami update: Port open and operating normally with max draught of approx 8m. Warehousing available. The port of Lhokseumawe is an old general cargo port.

Lhokseumawe is one of only two protected anchorages situated on the N coast of Sumatera, on the Strait of Malacca. It is a commercial port which is open to foreign trade. In addition to inter island and passenger traffic, the port also handles bulk cargoes.

Max draught 8.0m.

The approach to the anchorage is clear of charted dangers outside the 20.0m depth contour. The recommended anchorage is in a position 05°18.0'N 097°01.8'E.

The port channel is 540m in length, 200m wide with min depth of 10.0m LWS.

Pilotage is compulsory, the pilot boards at the anchorage position. Request for pilot should be sent 6 hours before arrival and 3 hours before departure.

The port limits are: A line drawn 090° seaward for 1.1nm, from a post charted in position 05°11.3'N 097°08.8'E, then to the extremity of a similar line drawn from Pusong (1.25nm SSW), the point S of Lhokseumawe.

Berthing light at Blanglancang (05°13.5'N 097°05.4'E). Lhokseumawe Light (05°12'N 097°08'E).

Semi diurnal. MHWS 23m, MHWN 22m, MLWS 01m, MLWN 01m. Range approx 22m Tidal streams in the vicinity of Lhokseumawe are weak. The flow is affected by the W setting current along the coast.

Winds: The port is safe from strong winds and typhoons but the area is dominated by the Monsoon winds. During the SW monsoon, the roadstead is well sheltered, but confined, and depths increase rapidly offshore. During the NE monsoon a nasty sea can be caused by fresh winds blowing against the tidal stream. Rainfall: The area has high annual rainfall which peaks between Oct and Jan with 100-300mm. The dry months are; Feb, June-Aug. Visibility: Generally good range. Fog occurs but does not have an influence on navigation, although visibility may be down to 6km.

Radio: It is recommended to use Jakarta Radio for passing messages at long range, callsign "PKX". Working hours are 0001-0400hrs UTC on 8542kHz and 0001-1200hrs UTC on 8752kHz. Coastal Radio Station: Callsign ''PKA-24''. Inmarsat communication is possible. VHF: Port: Ch 16, 12 and 14, available 24 hours. Harbour control and agents: Ch 14 and 10.

Immigration: All crew members must have a valid travel document. Crews from communist countries are not allowed to disembark whilst in port.

Should be advised to agent at 10, 3, 2 and 1 day prior to arrival and 6 hours in advance. In addition to date and time of arrival the Master should also advise the estimated draught on arrival.

Free pratique is granted on arrival. Ship Sanitation Control Certificate (SSCC) and Ship Sanitation Control Exemption Certificate (SSCEC) can be renewed at the major ports.
