Rijeka (HRRJK)

The port offers a sheltered harbour, protected by 2 breakwaters, with safe anchorage outside the harbour limits. The port handles a wide variety of cargo including, containers, ore, timber, grain, phosphate, crude and refined petroleum products. All types of vessels are handled at a total of 41 berths including tankers, bulk carriers, container carriers, general cargo, passenger and Ro-Ro vessels. The INA Oil Refinery has terminals at Urinj and Omisalj, all within the bay area. See separate entries for Omisalj Oil Terminal, Sepen Bay Petrochemicals terminal and Rasa port.

Rijeka is located in the N of the Adriatic Sea in Kvarner Bay.

Approx 13,400,000t of cargo, 270,000TEU and 23,000 passengers handled annually.

The access entrance to the Rijeka port basin has a width of 270m, Susak port basin has a width of 45m. The direction for entering the harbour is as follows: From the anchorage area there are no dangers in the approach to Glavna Luka, the entrance is marked by lights. S side (green metal framework tower on a white concrete hut, 14m in height) on the head of Rijeka Breakwater, N side: (red square metal tower with column and gallery, 7m in height) on the head of Bratislava Quay.

Pilotage is compulsory for vessels over 500GT. Pilot boards in the roads within the anchorage area limit. For the oil terminal at Omisalj, pilot boards 5nm S of Rijeka main light. On request, the pilot will board tankers over 200,000DWT in the N part of Kvarner at approx Lat 45°14.0' N. Pilot is available throughout 24 hours. Pilotage should be requested 24 and 2 hours in advance through the agent or on VHF Ch 12. For vessels carrying safe cargo, pilot boards in the following positions: ..... 1. Mlaka Lighthouse (white concrete tower, black bands, on white three story building, 38m in height) (45°20.0'N 014°25.0'E) and positioned from Mlaka Light.

Navigation is prohibited in parts of Srednji Kanal for cargo vessels over 500GT and for vessels carrying dangerous substances or which have not been certified gas free. Except from Oct 1-Mar 31, the above mentioned vessels may navigate in these areas with a pilot onboard.

Passage Vela Vrata: Vessels over 50GT should follow Traffic Separation Scheme.

There are 10 tugs available with capacities between 1,400hp and 3,640hp, bollard pull 21-60t. Tugs equipped for fire fighting are available.

Vessels should send ETA 24 hours prior to arrival via the agent. Vessels having an extended Port State Control inspection should send ETA 72 hours in advance of arrival.

If a vessel does not have a Croatian flag onboard the pilot will bring the flag onboard with him, if it has been ordered in advance.

Regulations concerning entry: Except for the purpose of manoeuvring, stopping is prohibited in the sea area between the N limit of the anchorage and the coast N. Trgovacka Luka: Vessels keep to starboard on entering or leaving the harbour and must proceed at a speed of less than 5kts. Vessels leave harbour bow first. Luka Susak: Vessels entering or leaving must proceed at a speed of less than 5kts. Vessels leaving have priority over those entering the harbour. Brajdica Container Terminal: Special regulations are in force and include the following: Entry is not permitted in wind strengths of over 20kts. Vessels are normally secured bows E at the S berth to facilitate departure in the event of a sudden deterioration of the weather. Repairs to machinery which immobilise the ship are prohibited. The vessel must be in a good working state, with sufficient crew onboard, to proceed to sea at short notice. Petrolejska Luka: Entry is permitted in daylight only. Luka Brgud: Vessels are prohibited from entering an area off the entrance to the harbour.

To obtain free pratique 24 hours prior to arrival the following details should be advised: The number of crew and passengers, health conditions and possible infectious diseases. No person is allowed to leave the vessel until free pratique is obtained.
