Senj (HRSEN)

The port is currently closed for commercial operations. Information for the port is retained should the port reopen. The main commodities handled at the port are timber and firewood. The port is subject to NE winds in winter, at times reaching hurricane force, and can be dangerous for small vessels.

Senj lies on the Northern strip of the Adriatic Coast, approx 72km S of Rijeka.

In a Bora vessels can anchor outside the port of Senj W of the coast between the head of the S breakwater and a chapel, (approx 0.15nm SSE), with hawsers to the shore, however there is no shelter in other winds. The holding ground is not good and anchorage under Otok Krk or in Supertarska Draga is preferable to exposure to Bora gales.

Entry is directly from the Velebitski Kanal. The entrance to the harbour, open NW, approx 0.15nm in width lies between the head of 2 moles. Vessels approaching from the S are advised to pass at least 0.05nm W of Lukobran Marija Art on account of silting from Potok Senjska Draga and a groyne projecting from the mole. In Bora conditions, vessels entering the harbour should adjust their approach to stem the wind if necessary when approaching from the N turning under the lee of the land S of the harbour.

Compulsory and available throughout 24 hours. Notice of ETA and request for a pilot must be made to the Harbour Master or ship's agent not less than 24 hours prior to arrival. Notice to be given through Rijeka Radio. The pilot boards approx 0.5nm WNW of the harbour entrance. The boarding position is negotiable.

Light (octagonal tower, 10m in height), situated at the head of Lukobran Marija Art. Light (octagonal tower, red top 10m in height), on the head of Lukobran Sveti Ambroza.

Range 0.5m.

Request for towage must be made to the Harbour Master or ship's agent not less than 24 hours prior to arrival. Notice to be given through Rijeka Radio.

The harbour is protected from the S but exposed NW. It lies at the mouth of a deep ravine forming a gap in the Velebit mountains and is exposed to the Bora which may blow without warning and with great fury in violent squalls enveloping the harbour and town in spray. The Bora can blow from varying directions, the most frequent being from the ENE. The stronger the Bora, the shorter its duration. During the summer it can happen that while there is a violent Bora in progress at Senj, a calm or light breeze prevails a few miles N or S along the coast. It is not unusual during the winter months for the quayside, bollards and light-structures to be covered with frozen spray. During a severe Bora it is dangerous to enter the harbour, impossible to berth and dangerous to attempt departure. Vessels are advised to leave the harbour as soon as possible after cessation of a Bora because heavy seas and swell cause pounding against the berths, parting cables and hawsers. Bora portents are clear blue skies over the harbour with cloud over the Velebit mountains inland, shortly before the onset of the winds. Every precaution needs to be made against the Bora at Senj.

For tankers, ETA is to be sent 72, 48 and 24 hours prior to arrival. All other vessels are to send an ETA 48 and 24 hours prior to arrival. Advanced cargo specification, for vessels carrying dangerous and/or noxious cargo, is to be advised 48 hours prior to arrival.

If a vessel does not have a Croatian flag onboard the pilot will bring the flag onboard with him if it has been ordered in advance.

NOR is to be tendered between Mon-Thu 0800-1800hrs and Fri 0800-1400hrs.
