Kavala (GRKVA)

Kavala is a small sheltered port encompassing the offshore oil terminal of Prinos, which is situated between Kavala and Thassos. The port offers good anchorage, fresh water and has road connections to Thessaloniki and Istanbul. There are liquid facility and dry bulk berths at Nea Karvali. Furthermore, Limin Elevtheron and Keramoti port are also under the purview of Kavala Port Authority S.A. The port handles dry bulk, break bulk, container, liquid, Ro-Ro and passengers.

Kavala is located on the S coast of the Greek mainland, opposite the island of Thassos, approx 190nm N of Athens.

Harbour: LOA 199.9m, beam 32.26m, 10.5m, 63,573DWT. Offshore: LOA 250m, draught 20m, 106,644DWT.

Anchorage may be obtained as convenient in the lee of the S mole. Outer anchorage: Available in depths of 30-40m, sand and mud, from 0.5nm to 2nm S of Akra Kara Orman. Limin Elevtheron: Available off the fort in the SW area of the bay and off Nea Peramos, situated W of the bay where 2 iron stakes of a ruined pier exist.

Ormos Elevtheron is used by vessels sheltering from S winds and offers good anchorage. The head of the bay has shallow depths of less than 9.0m.

Pilotage is compulsory for all non Greek flag vessels and most Greek flag vessels and is available throughout 24 hours. Send ETA 24 hours in advance to agent or direct to Port Authority. Requests for pilot should be made on Ch 12. Vessels awaiting a pilot should maintain a listening watch on Ch 12. Pilot boards approx 0.5nm from southern breakwater.

A light is exhibited at the head of both the N and S mole. Akra Kara Orman Light (round hut, 3.0m in height, 40°55.9'N 024°24.9'E).

Depth at the entrance 13.5m.

Range 0.6m.

Two tugs are available, 1,000 and 1,800hp respectively. The bollard pull is between 11 -19t.

Prevailing winds: Variable. Strong winds from S send in heavy sea and render the main harbour unsafe for vessels that are unable to obtain shelter in the lee of the S mole. Shelter from S winds can be obtained in Ormos Elevtheron (7nm SW). The level of the sea rises 0.5m with a S'ly wind and falls 0.5m with a N'ly wind.

Olympia Radio ("SVA") receives distress or urgent messages and public communication (working channel). Watch frequencies VHF/FM, 2182kHz and HF/DSC as follows: MF 2187.5kHz. HF 4207.5kHz, 6312kHz, 8414.5kHz, 12577kHz, 16804.5kHz. Heraklio, Limnos and Corfu Radio for general watch calling frequencies. The stations work throughout 24 hours. Customs allowances: Each officer and crew member is allowed 1 bottle of spirits and 1 carton of cigarettes each. Immigration: Immigration authorities issue crew passes. For EU nationals there are no Immigration procedures. There are special regulations for nationals of countries such as Russia, Poland, Ukraine, Czech Republic, Serbia, Montenegro, Slovakia and South American countries. Crew being repatriated to non European countries must have a ticket which the agent must show to the authorities, agent's guarantees are requested by various authorities.

Special forms exist for all documents but apply only to liner vessels. These are delivered onboard on arrival.

Initial ETA to be sent to vessel's agent on departure from last port. Additional ETA's to be sent 48, 24 and 12 hours prior to arrival to the vessel's agent. One hour prior to arrival, port authorities, pilot and agents should be contacted by VHF giving exact time of arrival. The ETA message should include: Ship's particulars, cargo information, dangerous cargo (if any onboard, with details), health condition and stowaway details (if any).

Pratique should be applied for on arrival and cannot be applied for by radio. Ship Sanitation Control Exemption Certificates are issued.

Can be tendered anytime but will only be accepted between 0800-1700hrs.
