Port Kamsar (GNKMR)

Port Kamsar handles bauxite, general cargo and liquid cargo.

Port Kamsar, formerly known as Kakande, is located on the E bank of the Rio Nunez River, approx 17km from the sea.

Harbour: Draught 10.0m, LOA 229m, 82,300DWT, beam 32.26m. Offshore: Draught 19.0m, LOA 300m, 211,000DWT.

If the berth is occupied, the vessel will normally be anchored in the anchorage waiting area to await berth availability. The anchorage area is in approx position 050° x 0.5nm from the S end of the Bauxite Loading Wharf. The bottom is mainly mud with good holding.

Rio Nunez transit: The channel, from the mouth of Rio Nunez to the Bauxite Loading Wharf (BLW) at Port Kamsar, is 17km in length and has a minimum width of 120m. The channel is marked by 23 lightbuoys. The channel is subdivided into an outer and inner channel, the bottom of which consists of mud and sand. The whole channel starting from Buoys No 1 and 2, up to BLW, has a depth of 9.0m below reference data level (RDL), which is defined at +0.15m above the LW register. The turning basin for inbound vessels is dredged to a minimum of 7.0m below RDL and extends westwards 360m from the Compagnie des Bauxites de Guinee Berth. The bottom is mainly mud.

The density of the Rio Nunez at the Compagnie des Bauxites de Guinee Berth varies between 1007 during the rainy season to 1022 during the dry season at HW.

Vessels berth at the Compagnie des Bauxites de Guinee Berth with bows S, arriving at HW slack and leaving on the flood tide not later than 1 hour before HW. Mooring: Compagnie des Bauxites de Guinee Berth ..... 1. During the dry season, experienced between Nov to mid-Jun, the following minimum moorings are to be used on vessels berthing at the Bauxite Berth: Head ropes 5 Forward springs 2 Stern ropes 6 Back springs 2 2. During the rainy season, with heavy rain water run-off joining with the ebb tidal flow causes extremes of water movement, the stern lines must be augmented to a minimum of 7. More stern lines to be run out if available. 3. Small vessels loading calcinated bauxite, when loaded draught does not exceed 8.5m, are required to run the following number of moorings: Head ropes 4 Forward springs 1 Stern ropes 4 Back springs 1 4. The number and arrangement of lines may be changed to take into account tidal and/or weather conditions at the berth. This advice will be given by the Harbour Master or his deputy i.e Pilots. 5. All lines shall be in good condition and shall be of similar type when run in the same direction. All lines must be well secured and made fast on bitts in figure of eight. It is imperative that all lines in the same direction be heaved to an even tension to ensure stresses are evenly distributed. 6. If lines are stored on winches, then the winches must be fully braked. Self tensioning winches are not to be used in automatic mode.

Pilotage service is compulsory for all vessels over LOA 45m. Vessels under LOA 45m will be required to have a pilot aboard on their first visit, but may be exempt thereafter by consent of the Harbour Master and approval of the Port Director. Pilot boards in the waiting area (bounded by Lat 10°26'N and Lat 10°28'N and Long 014°44'W and Long 014°46'W). When conditions are unfavourable for the pilot to board in the waiting area, the pilot will pass instructions by VHF from the pilot vessel. Pilot boats are fitted with VHF radio and can be contacted on Ch 16 or 12. When approaching Rio Nunez estuary, vessels should contact pilot on Ch 16.

The port limits are defined as follows: From position 10°24.0'N 014°41.0'W, follow a line due W to a position 10° 24.0'N 014°48.0'W. Then a line due N to a point 10°38.0'N 141°48.0'W. From this position, follow a line due E to Point Kembuto. From that point, follow the Rio Nunez shore line in a NE direction, past Point Malaouine to a position 10°44.0'N 014°37.2'W. From there, a line due E to the eastern shore of the Rio Nunez, 10°44.0'N 014° 34.5'W. From this position, in a S'ly direction following the Rio Nunez shoreline, pass Pointe du Zebre, to Port Kamsar, to Point de l'Amarante, then follow the shoreline, cross the Dougoubona to Koufen Island, follow its shoreline to Point Dapiar, then the shoreline to Point Bencer, then the shoreline to the extreme southern end of Gonzales Island, then a straight line to position 10°24.0'N 014°41.0'W. Port Inner Area: This area starts at the northern limit of the general cargo storage land filled area. It includes the discharging area, the Quai Francais, the workshops, sheds in Quai Italien, the Nautical Club, the jetty and the Compagnie des Bauxites de Guinee Berth. This port area is limited by the harbour road and a fence. Excluded from this area is the CBG Engineering Offices, Personnel and workshop. On the E of the harbour road, the port area includes the fenced land of the shore radio antennae, the offices of the Port Administration, the Customs Offices and transit sheds.

Approaches to Rio Nunez: Vessels bound for Port Kamsar will find there are few natural features to aid a landfall. The most prominent feature is Cape Verga situated to the E of the Rio Nunez entrance. The cape can be observed by radar at a distance of approx 30nm. To the W of the Rio Nunez entrance are the Company Shoals and Conflict Reef. These are screened by a series of lightbuoys and vessels approaching from the W should keep them well on the port hand. Another prominent feature is Gonzales Rock on the starboard side close to the entrance to Rio Nunez. A lightbuoy is positioned screening the rocks and is identified as Buoy No VII. Leading Lights, in line bearing 097°, are established close to the root of the N of the two piers.

Airdraught: The maximum permissible airdraught at the Compagnie des Bauxites de Guinee Berth is 19.52m minus the height of HW. Due consideration should be given to the daily height of HW. Max draught on departure from bauxite berth: Departure with max draught occurs one hour before HW. Loading must be completed on time to allow the ship to prepare for departure, ie remove the gangway and single up and let go the last line, one hour before departure. The calculation for max sailing draught is: ..... Height of HW - reduction for 1 hour before HW = Height of water 1 hour before HW (m) Height of water 1 hour before HW + least channel depth (9.0m) = Depth in channel (m) Depth in channel - UKC (0.6m) = Max loading draught (m) The maximum loading draught will be between 11.9m for neap tides and 13.8m for spring tides.

The tide, in the proximity of the buoyed channels, runs NNE and SSW at 2.5kts under normal conditions, but can reach 4.5kts during spring tides in the rainy season. The flood tide runs parallel with the line of the Compagnie des Bauxites de Guinee Berth at a speed up to 4.0kts. The ebb tide, augmented by water coming out of Dougoufissa Creek, runs through the bauxite wharf at an angle of approx 20° at a speed of up to 7.0kts on spring tides in the rainy season, tending to set the vessel off the wharf. It is, therefore absolutely essential to tend the mooring lines to an even tension and watch them continuously, particularly on the stern of a loaded vessel. Sea and swell: In the Rio Nunez approach area, waves up to 4.0m can be encountered. At the entrance to the fairway or channel, they are generally less than 1.0m high during the rainy season and less than 0.5m high in the dry season. Waves and swell in the inner channel and harbour are generally very moderate.

Tugs are available.

Port Kamsar has a typical tropical climate which is characterised by two separate seasons: Rainy season: Extends from June to October. Maximum rainfall occurs during July and August, mainly at night. Relative humidity is 70% to 80% during the day and 90% to 95% at night. Temperatures range from 17°C to 38°C with an average between 20°C to 28°C. Wind conditions are variable from between the S and W, 7-27kts. Possible tornadoes from between N and NE with winds reaching 55kts for short periods. Dry season: Extends from November to May. There is little rainfall with relative humidity being between 30% and 50% during the day and 80% to 90% at night. There is often coastal fog in the mornings. Temperatures range from 15°C to 42°C with an average of between 20°C and 35°C. Wind conditions are light breezes from the SW to W, up to 10kts. Prevailing winds: SW'ly to W'ly.

The port radio station is no longer working although satellite communication is possible throughout 24 hours. VHF: Ch 16, 12. Watchkeeping hours are 0800-1200hrs and 1330-1730hrs on working days.

Masters are required to send an ETA, addressed to Port Kamsar agent and/or Shipping Superintendent CBG, through Port Kamsar satellite station 7, 5, 3 and 1 day prior to arrival at the port.

The "Q" flag should be flown by arriving vessels.

Stowaways: It is the ship's Master and/or owner's responsibility to take all necessary precautions and inspections to prevent stowaways from coming onboard. They may board from the offshore side, using the anchor chains, pilot or Jacob's ladder, or from the shoreside using the mooring ropes or gangway.
