Caen (FRCFR)

Caen port consists of 6 terminals spanning from Ouistreham to Caen. Transmarche Terminal located outside of the harbour at Ouistreham handles cross channel fast ferries. The remaining 5 terminals, which handle fast ferries, prestigious ships, yachts, general cargo, bulk grain, salt, scrap metal, fertiliser and molasses, are located within the canal which travels SSW to Caen.

Caen is situated approx 7nm from the sea. Access is via the Ouistreham Locks and Canal.

LOA 199.9m, beam 28.5m, draught 9.4m, 34,941DWT.

Approx 4,000,000t cargo and 250,000 passengers annually.

Anchorage is available 1.0nm N or Ouistreham Buoy. Prohibited anchorage: Anchorage is forbidden in the locks or canal.

The outer channel, the swinging area and the car ferry dock are dredged to 8.0m below CD level. The access to the West lock is dredged to 3.25m below CD level. Max authorised draught is 9.0m FW. Entrance channel: Ships are admitted in the channel with a "pilot's foot" in proportion to their deadweight: ..... 1. One foot for deadweight under 3,000t 2. One foot and a half between 3,000 and 11,000DWT 3. Two feet and a half above 11,000DWT The "pilot's foot" for admission to the East lock is calculated as follows: ..... 1. 8in (0.20m) for ships under 1,000DWT 2. 1ft 4in (0.41m) for ships between 1,000 and 3,000DWT 3. 2ft 4in (0.71m) for ships over 3,000DWT. Note: Owners and their agents are requested to apply to the Port Authorities to ensure conditions of admittance into the port when ships stays are foreseen during a neap water period as well as when their ships must call at this port with a draught above 7.92m.The port upstream is maintained at a constant level. The locks enable the access of vessels of 28-30,000DWT loaded partially with 20,000t of cargo. Vessels carrying dangerous cargo or hydrocarbons and over 1,600GT to consider the navigation controlled approach channel to be a mandatory access channel. To continue entering the channel these vessels must contact authorities on VHF channel 74, they are restricted in their ability to manoeuvre and must show the appropriate lights. Note: Request for a bridge to open is one long blast, while a short blast notifies small craft in the canal to keep close to the bank for the passage of commercial vessels. The opening of a bridge is indicated with a green light, if a light is not seen or a red light is shown then the vessel should stop at least 400m from the bridge and wait until green light is visible. ..... The outer port limits are defined by the following: North limit the parallel of 49°18.1'N. East limit the meridian of 000° 13.0'W. West limit the meridian of 000°15.0'W.

Ouistreham Main Lighthouse (white tower red top, height 38m) (49°17.0'N 000° 15.4'W). Ouistreham Buoy: An E Cardinal buoy at 49°20.5'N 000°14.7'W, (Qk Fl W) marks a wreck at 3.65nm off Ouistreham Lighthouse. A church belfy stands 0.5m SW of Ouistreham Lighthouse with a water tower located 0.5m SW of that. Vessels should anchor to landward of the above buoy while waiting for the pilot. Anchorage of petroleum tankers is to the E of Ouistreham Buoy. E of the channel, one black and yellow buoy (North Cardinal mark) (VQ W) at 49° 19.7'N 000°13.3'W, marks the Merville bank. Lighthouse: White tower 38m in height with red summit, E of the lock (Oc WR 4s W 17M R 13M); red sector between the shore and the Essarts Buoy. Entrance channel: Entrance alignment at 184° S consists of two synchronised red lights (Oc (4) 12s). Position of the downstream light: 49°17.2'N 000°14.7'W. Position of the upstream light, on shore near the lighthouse: 49°16.9'N 000° 14.9'W. Buoyage: Light fitted buoys and beacons, in pairs, form 6 gates. The first gate on the parallel 49°19.2'N is marked by: On the W, No 1 Buoy, green with a green conical top mark (Q G). On the E, No 2 Buoy, red with a red cylindrical top mark (Q R). The second gate on the parallel 49°18.8'N is marked by: On the W, No 3 Buoy, green with a green conical top mark (Fl G 4s). On the E, No 4 Buoy, red with a red cylindrical top mark (Fl R 4s). The third gate on the parallel 49°18.5'N is marked by: On the W, No 5 Buoy, green with a red cylindrical top mark (Q G). On the E, No 6 Buoy, red with a red cylindrical top mark (Q R). The fourth gate on the parallel 49°18.1'N is marked by: On the W, one green beacon (Iso 4s). On the E, one red beacon, "Saint Medard" (Oc (2) R 6s), indicates the end of the E enrokments. The fifth gate on the parallel 49°17.8N is marked by: On the W, one green beacon (Q G). On the E, one red beacon (Q R). The sixth gate on the parallel 49°17.6'N is marked by: On the W, one green beacon (Iso G 4s). There is a meteorological station on top of the light beacon. On the E (Iso R 4s). At 49°17.3'N 000°14.5'W, one red beacon (Fl R 4s), marks the axis of the N swinging area. Luminous alignments mark the axis and certain limits of the car ferries swinging area. A quick flashing orange light marks the pillar of the previous downstream light of entrance alignment at 186°.

Dangerous Cargo: Vessel's bound to Caen with dangerous cargo of fertilizer can berth only when one or two 800mі/h pumps are in place. Max speed within the canal: Max speed authorised is 7kts. Opening times of W Lock: Normal opening of the West lock: Approx 3 hours before until 4 hours after HW. Opening times of E Lock: Approx 2 hours before until 3 hours after HW. Entrance of ships in advance on the tide, that is to say before two hours preceding the high tide, may be admitted according to their dimensions, draught and atmospheric conditions. Bridges: The canal is crossed by the following moveable bridges: Pont de Benouville (km 9), also known as Pegasus Bridge, with a width clearance of 40m. Pont de Colombelles (km 4) with a width clearance of 30m. Pont de la Fonderie, at the entrance to Bassin Saint-Pierre (Km 0), with a width clearance of 12m. Vertical clearance: The maximum airdraught for Nouveau Bassin and Bassin Saint-Pierre is 33m over a width of 80m under Calix Autoroute Viaduct (Km 2). Note: Vessels must maintain a distance of 400m when proceeding through the canal. Overtaking is prohibited within the canal except in the case of an emergency.

The Baie de Seine traffic identification zone covers the area bounded by an arc of radius 22nm centred on Cap de la Heve Light (49°30.8'N 000°04.33'E). The system is compulsory for all commercial vessels over 50m in length destined or departing from the waiting area or the port of Caen-Ouistreham. They must report to Baie de Seine Trafic on VHF Ch 22 and a continuous watch must be maintained on VHF Ch 16 and 74 whilst in the area. Traffic lock schemes: Light panels, lighted by day and night are shown on the control lock house. The meanings of the different combinations are as follows: ..... 1. 3 flashing red lights (vertical) Danger, all vessels must stop or go away according to the received instructions. 2. 3 fixed red lights (vertical) Vessels do not proceed towards locks even if gates are open. 3. 3 fixed green lights (vertical) Vessels can proceed towards locks. 4. 1 fixed green light A vessel can only proceed if it has received special instructions to do so. 1 fixed white light 1 fixed green light (vertical) A fixed white light on the E or on the W of message No 3 permits fishing and pleasure boats to enter the relevant lock.

Four tugs are available through Normandie Tug Services; Tug Caen-Ouistreham 5, Tug Caen-Ouistreham 4, Tug Caen-Ouistreham 3 and Tug Cherbourg 1. 2 tugs are recommended for vessels with beam over 17m.
