Calvi (FRCLY)

Calvi is a small commercial and fishing port with a large yacht harbour. The port is sheltered from the N. Partial protection from N and NE winds is provided by a small jetty which projects SSE from the shore near the SE angle of a citadel.

Summer Zone for ships over 100m in length and Winter Seasonal Area for ships of 100m or less in length, Winter Dec 16 to Mar 15, Summer Mar 16 to Dec 15.

Calvi is situated on the NW coast of Corsica.

LOA 120m, draught 7.5m.

Anchorage can be obtained within Golfe de Calvi in depths of 5.0-30m, sand and weed. The recommended anchorage is in a depth of 12.0m, sand and weed, 0.15nm E of the head of the yacht harbour breakwater. The best shelter for small vessels is obtained by anchoring as close as possible to a tower at the W end of Quai Nord. Prohibited anchorage: Anchorage is prohibited between June and September in an area, marked by lightbuoys at its W end, to the SE of the port. The area is used for small vessel moorings during this period. Cables land in the vicinity of Punta San Francesco (42°34.3'N 008°45.3'E), anchoring trawling and dredging are prohibited in the area 0.5nm wide extending 0.6nm NNE from the coast.

Approach and entry: The port is approached from the NE through Golfe de Calvi and entered S of Jetee Nord-Est which extends SE from the foot of the citadel. From a position NE of La Revallata Light 42°35.0'N 008°43.5'E the track leads S passing, with positions relative to the light: W of Punta Spano 3.5nm ENE, then: W of Punta Caldanu 3.25nm E, on which stands a ruined tower, to a position 1.25nm NW of Camp Raffali water tower 3.5nm ESE. From this position the recommended track leads SW through the regulated area passing, with positions relative to Port de Calvi Pier, also known as Jetee Nord-Est, Head Light (42°34.1'N 008°45.8'E) (white square turret, dark green top, 10m in height): NW of a fish haven 0.7nm ENE, marked by a lightbuoy (W cardinal), then: SE of Calvi citadel NE light 0.2nm N (framework tower, green top, on white house, 6m in height), then: SE of the belfry 0.15nm NW standing within the citadel, then: SE of the Pier Head Light. The track then leads S of the Pier Head Light then NNW towards the berth. Mariners should note the N cardinal lightbuoy and a mooring buoy respectively 0.2nm SSE and 0.1nm SW of the Pier Head Light.

Pilotage is compulsory for vessels over 60m LOA and 150GT. The pilot is provided by Haute Corse Station whose centre is at Bastia. The limits of the Compulsory Pilotage Area that serve the ports of Calvi and L'lle-Rousse are as follows: ..... 1. East limit: The meridian 009°00'E, from the coast up to parallel 42°40.0'N. 2. West limit: The line joining the following two positions: a. The intersection of the Lat 42°40.0'N and the Long 008°50.0'E. b. La Pointe de la Revellata Light. 3. North limit: The parallel of 42°40.0'N.

La Revellata Light (42°35.0'N 008°43.6'E), exhibited from a white square tower, black top and corners, 19m in height.

Regulations concerning entry: A regulated area, 0.2nm wide and extends 0.8nm NE from the port. Vessels below 20m in length and sailing vessels may enter the area, to enter or leave the port, but are prohibited from stopping. These vessels must give way to warships and power driven vessels of 50m length or greater.

Range 0.3m.

Prevailing winds: NW'ly. With N or NE winds a heavy sea can develop within Golfe de Calvi, this does not usually prevent vessels from entering the port.
