Dellys (DZDEL)

The port is strategically positioned and this is shown in its rich and diverse history dating back to the Phoenicians. Nowadays, the congested port is used by small recreational and fishing vessels (predominantly sardine) which are protected within the harbour by a breakwater to the E.

Dellys is situated 90km W of Algiers.

Max LOA 21.3m, beam 5m, draught 6m and 5DWT.

Anchorage is obtainable 0.8nmm SSE in depths of between 13m and 24m. The holding ground of the anchorage is good and the roadstead off the harbour is sheltered from the W'ly and NW'ly winds.

Vessels keep to the channel centred on the port’s green harbour light and oriented N-S between 3°54.8'E and 3°55.8'.

Pilotage is compulsory for entry, departing and for all movements within the port. Available during daylight hours only. Vessels should send ETA to the agent at least 24 hours prior to arrival. Pilots board within the anchorage area. Messages can be sent through Alger Radio (7TA).

Pointe de Dellys Light is exhibited from a yellow tower, 8m in height, with a red lantern, standing on Pointe de Dellys. The light is obscured by Cap Bengut when bearing less than 094°. A light is exhibited from a white tower 8m in height, with a green top standing at the head of the breakwater. A quay extends approx 0.1nm E from the shore at Dellys towards the head of the breakwater. A light is exhibited from a white tower 10m in height, with a red top, standing at the SE corner of the quay. Finally when approaching from the E a mosque is visible, which stands close W of the harbour.

Marine farms exist along the Algerian coast and may be marked by lighted or unlighted buoys or beacons.

Approx 370m offshore from Dellys, a counter current sets W and N, it then sets NE to join the main current.

Prevailing winds: W'ly to NW'ly.
