Sonderborg (DKSGD)

The port is currently closed to commercial shipping. Information for the port is retained should the port re-open. The port is divided into a South Harbour and a North Harbour by the King Christian X Bridge.

Summer Zone for ships over 100m in length and Winter Zone for ships of 100m or less in length. Winter Nov 1 to Mar 31, Summer Apr 1 to Oct 31.

Sonderborg is situated in Als Sund extending 0.7nm N and 0.5nm S of King Christian X Bridge.

Draught 6.5m, 4,000GT.

Anchorage is located in Als Fjord and Bay of Sonderborg. Except in an emergency, anchoring is prohibited within 0.1nm of the King Christian X Bridge.

The harbour can be approached from either N or S through Als Sund. Approach from S: From a position about 1.0nm SE of Dybbol Windmill (54°54.5'N 009°45.6'E), the track leads NE for approx 0.5nm, passing NW of a 5.2m shoal at the SW extremity of Osterhage, marked by a lightbuoy (W cardinal). From a position approx 1.1nm ESE of Dybbol Windmill, the track leads NNW for about 0.5nm, passing ENE of a 3.0m shoal at the E extremity of Vesterhage marked by a lightbuoy (port hand). The track then leads N and NNE through the narrows off Sonderborg Castle in the S approach to Kong Christian den X's Bro, where the direction of the buoyage changes so that, for N bound vessel, starboard hand buoys are moored on the W side of the track. Approach from the N: From a position approx 0.3nm N of Alssundbroens (54° 55.4'N 009°46.1'E) close E of No 13 Lightbuoy (starboard hand), marking the edge of the coastal bank of Mollehoved, the track leads S for about 0.6nm through the bridge as far as Odden on the E side, where the track leads SE and SSE for about 0.7nm to Kong Christian den X's Bro.

Local harbour pilots are available. They may be contacted by VHF and generally board off Middelgrund. Tankers and all other vessels over 2,000DWT are recommended to use the services of a pilot. Pilot boards as follows: ..... 1. Vessels using N entrance: N of Snogbaek Hage in position 55°00.0'N 009° 44.0'E or further N if required. 2. Vessels entering from the S: off Middlegrund in position 54°51.0'N 009° 49.0'E or further S if required.

From a position 0.2nm S of Sonderborg Castle, N as far as the S facing of Alssundbroen.

The navigable opening of the bridge is marked on the starboard side by green fixed lights and to port by red fixed lights, approaching from either direction. On the W side of the approach from N a bulwark, formed by a line of dolphins, runs NNW for 80m, a light is exhibited from the N dolphin.

Alssundbroens (54°55.4'N 009°46.1'E), fixed bridge in the N approaches to the harbour: Navigable width 50m, vertical clearance 33m. The King Christian X Bridge is a double wing bascule bridge with an opening width of 30m. The vertical headway under the bridge at mean level is 5.0m. Submarine cables are laid across Als Sund within 80m N and 25m S of the bridge. The bridge is closed for approx 2 min, when a freight train passes.

Sonderborg has a mean tidal range of about 0.6m.

Customs allowances: One bottle of spirits and 200 cigarettes per person are allowed. If quantities in excess of the allowance are found the penalty is a fine. The size of the fine depends on the amounts in excess of allowances. Clearance is handled by the agent but Customs Officers may board at any time to check the validity of the documents handed to the agent. Immigration: There are no restrictions for crew. Passengers of nationalities which require a visa are only allowed transit in Denmark for 36 hours.

There is no demand for an ETA by Port Authorities. ETA messages should be passed to the ship's agent who will relay it to relevant parties (port, stevedores, work gangs, etc). Pilot requires ETA at boarding point 24, 12 and 4 hours prior to arrival.

A vessel must remain at least 0.05nm from the bridge until the bridge signals are displayed. Speed within 0.1nm of the bridge is to be restricted to the min necessary for manoeuvring. Boats, davits and booms must be turned in during passage of the bridge and an anchor kept ready for letting go. Mooring at the bridge and landing on the piers is prohibited.

Pratique is not required for Danish ports. Agent may request a Maritime Declaration of Health from the Master. Ship Sanitation Control and Exemption Certificates can be renewed in large ports.
