Hirtshals (DKHIR)

The port is well protected with large fishing centre operation and one of Denmark largest Ro-Ro and ferry harbour with close connection to Norway and the North Atlantic. The port also handles general cargo, bulk and passengers.

Hirtshals is situated on the N coast of Jutland opening into the Skagerrak.

LOA 200m, draught 7.0m.

Approx 1,900,000t of cargo and 990,000 passengers are handled annually.

The approach to Hirtshals is marked on its E side by Hirtshals Lightbuoy moored 0.47nm NNE of the breakwater head and then by 1 buoy (port hand). Lightbuoys (starboard hand) are moored 0.3nm and 0.17nm NW of the breakwater head. A shoal with a depth of 3.6m lies 0.45nm NNE of the entrance to the harbour. A wave meter marked by 2 lightbuoys (yellow) is situated close E of Hirtshals Lightbuoy. The range lights at the entrance lie in the direction 166°. The range lights are furnished with red-painted triangle top markings, which at night appear as luminous triangles.

Pilotage for merchant vessels is not compulsory, however in the absence of local knowledge it is advisable either to take a pilot or obtain up to date information on depths from the Harbour Authority, especially in E winds when the water level is low. A harbour pilot is available and may be requested either through Skagen Radio or direct to the harbour watch via VHF radio.

Hirtshals leading lights: Exhibited as follows: The Front Light from a white mast standing on the transverse mole, the Rear Light from a white mast standing on an embankment near the railway station, these lights bearing 166° lead into the harbour in a least depth of 5.7m, the project depth in the entrance being 7.0m. A radio beacon transmits from the front light structure. The leading lights are fitted with red triangular daymarks which are lit at night. A light is exhibited from a green mast standing at the N end of the breakwater, a fog signal is sounded from the same structure. Lights are exhibited from the heads of the E and W moles, which are floodlit at night and from the heads of the transverse mole and of Pier No 1.

Water depth at harbour entrance is 10m.

Range 0.3m. The water level is raised in W storms by up to 1.5m and lowered in E storms by up to 1.0m. The current across the port entrance is determined by the wind. The current flows strongest and most frequently west to east, and can in certain situations exceed 3 knots.

Lyngby Radio (the only coast radio station in Denmark) is recommended for passing messages. The station works throughout 24 hours. Inmarsat communication is possible. VHF: Pilots & Port; Ch 16, 12, 13.

Customs allowances: One bottle of spirits and 200 cigarettes per person are allowed. If quantities in excess of the allowance are found the penalty is a fine. The size of the fine depends on the amounts in excess of allowances. Clearance is handled by the agent but Customs Officers may board at any time to check the validity of the documents handed to the agent. Immigration: There are no restrictions for crew. Passengers of nationalities which require a visa are only allowed transit in Denmark for 36 hours.

There is no demand for an ETA by Port Authorities. ETA messages should be passed to the ship's agent who will relay it to relevant parties (port, stevedores, work gangs, etc). Pilot requires ETA at boarding point 24, 12, 4 and 1 hour prior to arrival.

Pratique is not required for Danish ports. Agent may request a Maritime Declaration of Health from the Master. Ship Sanitation Control and Exemption Certificates can be renewed in large ports.
