Caldera (CLCLD)

The port of Caldera has two piers which are protected by the bay which is 1.75nm wide at its entrance and 1.6nm internally and has a depth ranging from 15.0 to 20.0m on a sandy bed. Caldera has facilities for the handling of general cargo imports and copper exports.

The port of Caldera is situated on the S shore of the Caldera Bay.

LOA 240m, beam 32.3m, draught 11.8m, 84,000DWT.

Approx 3,000,000t of cargo and 140 vessels handled annually.

Anchorage can be found in position 27°02.8'S 070°49.8'W, in depths of 20.0m with the head of Muelle Mecanizado bearing 220°, the distance is approx 0.6nm, sand. Quarantine and explosive anchorages are located in the NE bay. Caution: Vessels should not anchor, except with the permission of the port authority, within a radius of 0.45nm centred on the head of Muelle Mecanizado in order to avoid interference with vessels berthing.

From NW of Punta Caldera, (27°03'S 070°52'W) the approach to Puerto Caldera leads between Punta Caldera and Roca Chango (1.25nm NE), a pinnacle on which the sea breaks in heavy weather, noting a 14.3m stony patch 0.3nm WSW of Roca Chango, then into the bay to anchor or berth. There may be distinct anomalies when using magnetic compasses in the area.

Punta Padrones Terminal: Vessels to provide 6 mooring ropes forward and 7 aft of 220m in length and sound condition with no wire. Punta Caleta: Vessels to provide 4 mooring ropes each 200m long in sound condition for tying up to buoys and shore as well as 7 mooring ropes of 150m length astern.

Pilotage is compulsory for all foreign vessels and Chilean vessels over 1,000GT. Vessels should send ETA and pilot request via agents 24 hours in advance, confirming 12 hours in advance. ETA message should contain the following information: a) Vessel's name and call sign b) Flag c) LOA d) Mean draught e) GT. Pilot boards in position 27°02.42'S 70°50.34'W.

Inside a line drawn from Punta Caldera ENE to Punta Francisco.

A high intensity obstruction light for the use of aircraft, on a radio mast is situated in position 27°04.4'S 070°49.9'W. Punta Caldera Light (27°03.07'S 070°51.10''W) is a white truncated conical wooden tower with red bands,18m in height and visible from 2nm (Fl(1).W.3s), marking the Western headland of Caldera Harbour.

Mean maximum range 1.0m, mean minimum range 0.6m.

Available.

Prevailing winds: SW'ly. Caldera Bay is open to the N, but well sheltered from prevailing winds from the S or SW, which can reach in excess of 22kts, in the afternoons. In the winter, N winds can, very occasionally, lead to a stoppage of lighter traffic, but vessels themselves are not in danger. At the mechanical pier heavy surges can stop loading.

Customs: Crew's own personal possessions must tally with those listed on the Crew Personal Effects List. If there is a discrepancy, penalties range from confiscation of the goods not declared to imprisonment, depending the seriousness of the incident. Immigration: Crew List is checked against passports. There are no restrictions on crew and passengers in transit proceeding ashore provided they are in possession of a landing card. Some foreign nationalities require an entry visa if embarking or disembarking.

Vessels entering Chilean waters must at all times fly the Chilean flag at the foremast and also whilst in port. Fines for not complying may be imposed by the authorities.

It is expressly forbidden to throw overboard any ballast, rubbish or waste or to spill petroleum whilst in Chilean waters and harbours. If repairs or hull painting are required permission has to be requested from the port captain via the agent. Garbage is not allowed to be disposed of ashore. Vessels must comply with the use of rat guards, safety nets and gangway railings. Any repairs to the main engine must be authorised.

Pratique should be applied for on arrival after completion of formalities. It cannot be applied for by radio. The master must send a telex to the agent advising: ..... 1. Vessel's name, callsign and flag. 2. From where proceeding and to what port. 3. Last ports called at in the preceding 7 days. 4. ETA at port of destination. 5. Crew all in good health and having valid cholera vaccinations. 6. Where drinking water was last taken onboard.
