Chanaral (CLCNR)

The port of Chanaral is important for the shipment of copper and ores. Codelco operate a mechanical berth for loading minerals in bulk.

Chanaral is located in Chanaral Bay, approx 5km N of the port of Barquito.

LOA 200m, draught 12.5m.

Approx 140,000t of cargo and 90 vessels handled annually.

Outer anchorage: Anchorage may be obtained 1nm NNW of Punta Bryson 26°21'S 070° 40'W, in a depth of 31m. This anchorage is recommended for deep draught vessels. Chanaral de las Animas: Anchorage may be obtained 1nm NE of Punta Bryson in a depth of about 15.8m. The holding is good but it is open to NW and WSW. Loading at this berth is carried out by lighters and is frequently interfered with by swell, especially in winter, from May to the end of July. Explosives anchorage: Anchorage may be obtained about 0.875nm NNE of Punta Bryson, or as directed by the Port Authority.

Approach and entry: The port is approached and entered between Punta Bryson (26° 21'S 070°40'W) and Punta Achurra 3.5nm NNW. From a position W of Punta Bryson 26°21'S 070°40'W on the coastal route, the track leads ENE, passing (with positions relative to Punta Bryson): NNW of Punta Rocosa y Blanca, white rugged point (0.65nm WSW), then: NNW of Rocas Simpson (0.25nm WNW), a group of rocks extending to 0.25nm offshore. Then to the pilot boarding position, about 0.9nm NNW of Punta Bryson. Clearing bearing: The line of bearing 084° of Mogote Rayado (26°21.0'S 070° 38.2'W), open N of Punta Piedra Blanca 0.5nm W, passes N of Rocas Simpson 1.5nm W of Mogote Rayado.

Pilotage is compulsory for all vessels and available throughout 24 hours. Pilot boards 0.9nm NNW of Punta Bryson (26°21.00'S 70°40.00'W). Berthing is only possible between 0700hrs and 1800hrs.

Mean maximum range 1.1m, mean minimum range 0.9m.

A single tug of 275GT is available.

Prevailing winds are S/SW'ly and are strong, particularly during January - February. Storms from the W and NW may occur during May and June. E'ly winds, which generally blow at night, create a moderately-heavy sea in the bay. Fogs are frequent and generally occur during April - August.

Customs: Crew's own personal possessions must tally with those listed on the Crew Personal Effects List. If there is a discrepancy, penalties range from confiscation of the goods not declared to imprisonment, depending on the seriousness of the misdemeanour.Immigration: Crew List is checked against passports. There are no restrictions on crew and passengers in transit proceeding ashore provided they are in possession of a landing card. Some foreign nationalities require an entry visa if embarking or disembarking.

Initial ETA should be sent to the vessel's agent 24 and 12 hours prior to arrival, confirming 3 hours in advance. The ETA message must confirm that all cargo gear is in proper working order, if any cargo shifting is expected, if there is dangerous cargo onboard for discharge and/or transit and arrival draught.

Vessels entering Chilean waters must at all times fly the Chilean flag at the foremast and also whilst in port. Fines for not complying may be imposed by the authorities.

It is expressly forbidden to throw overboard any ballast, rubbish or waste or to spill petroleum whilst in Chilean waters and harbours. Vessels must comply with the use of rat guards, safety nets and gangway railings. Any repairs to the main engine must be authorised.

Pratique should be applied for on arrival after completion of formalities. It cannot be applied for by radio. The master must send a telex to the agent advising: ..... 1. Vessel's name, callsign and flag. 2. From where proceeding and to what port. 3. Last ports called at in the preceding 7 days. 4. ETA at port of destination. 5. Crew all in good health and having valid cholera vaccinations. 6. Where drinking water was last taken onboard.

NOR should be tendered upon arrival at the anchorage.

Masters must report their position, course, speed and ETA next port as soon as they enter Chilean waters (200nm) to "Directemar Valparaiso" by cable. Thereafter, the same information is to be sent daily, whilst in Chilean waters, at 0800hrs and 2000hrs. Reports to be sent via Playa Ancha Radio.
