Oranjestad (Aruba) (AWORJ)

Oranjestad is protected from the SW by a reef of coral and stones on which lie several inlets. Gaps in the reef provide 2 channels, the NW which is used mainly for entering the harbour and the SE channel which serves as an exit. The port provides 1500m of total quayside capable of handling mega cruise vessels and a vehicle carrier berth situated close to the entrance of the channel. On weekends, the vehicle carrier berth is used to accommodate a third mega cruise vessels.

Oranjestad is located on the SW coast of Aruba, which is one of the islands of the Lesser Antilles in the Southern Caribbean Sea.

Max draught 9.9m, LOA 340m, beam 38m.

Approx 815,000 passengers handled annually.

Anchorages suitable for the deepest draught vessels are located 7-8nm S of Oranjestad, with depth of 45m. Outer anchorage: Vessels may anchor outside the Barrier Reef, however the bottom shelves steeply and the services of a pilot are advised. Restricted anchorage extends W of the coast, it is reserved for the use of vessels carrying out repairs and underwater hull cleaning. Special permission should be obtained.

Vessel normally approached through the NW channel, depth 11.2m and depart through the SE hannel, depth 10m. The W channel has a width of 141m and the E channel width is 243m, narrowing to 204m. Directions for entering Oranjestad Harbour: From a position WNW of the NW channel, leading lights standing at the head of the bay and in line bearing 110° lead through this channel. Great attention should be paid to the current. Front lights situated at position 12°31.5'N 070°02.6'W, 3 lights disposed vertically, black mast 23m in height, yellow bands, dayglow yellow framework, diamond Topmark on the N side of a sand coloured building. Rear lights, 5 lights in the form of a diamond, black mast 29m in height, yellow bands, 430m from the front lights. The track leads into the harbour on the alignment (110°) of these marks, passing (with positions relative to the front light): SSW of the coastal bank extending 0.3nm S from Punta Brabo (0.85nm NW), the edge of which is marked by two light beacons, and: NNE of the bank extending 0.35nm NW from an islet (0.3nm NW) from an islet (0.3nm W) which forms the SE entrance point of the channel. The NW extremity of the bank is marked by a lightbuoy (special) and the edge of the barrier reef close E of the islet is marked by a light beacon. Once inside, the track leads directly to the berths. The leading light structures are reported to be difficult to distinguish by day. Directions for leaving Oranjestad Harbour: Vessels departing from Oranjestad leave through the SE channel, which is marked by numbered light beacons (concrete columns). There are no specific directions for passing this channel, but attention is drawn to an isolated patch (12° 30.6'N 070°02.1'W), with a depth of 9.4m over it, lying on the E side at the seaward end of the channel.

Compulsory for vessels over 50GT. Pilot boards in following positions: NW Entrance (12°31.3'N 070°04.1'W). SE Entrance (12°30.3'N 070°03.0'W).

Within the bay, the trend of the channel is almost across the direction of the prevailing wind, so that large vessels and those in ballast must exercise great caution, especially at night, to avoid the reef to leeward. Difficulty may be experienced in berthing at the main wharf when the trade wind is blowing and it is preferable to enter either Westhaven or Oosthaven head to wind. When leaving the basins, the use of a kedge anchor is used.

Range 0.4m. Current: In the open sea, the current is W going with an approx rate of 1 to 2kts. This W set can be stronger, but a rate of 3kts rarely occurs. Occasionally there is no current, or instead an E set which then does not exceed 2kts. At times, when the W set is strong and close to the barrier reef, an E set of approx 0.5kt may occur inside the reef. The effect of this set will rarely be noticed as the influence of the wind is mostly in the opposite direction and stronger.

There are 2 tugs available of 2,200bhp and 3,500bhp.

Prevailing winds: SE'ly. Aruba has a mild climate with rainfall averaging 420mm annually. Most of the rain falls between Oct and Feb.
