St Thomas Island is located in the US Virgin Islands which lie at the eastern end of the Greater Antilles and the northern end of the Lesser Antilles, 56km E of Puerto Rico.

Anchorage "Alpha": Inner harbour, holding ground, sand and shell. Anchorage "Bravo:" Outer harbour, for vessels undergoing inspection by customs, immigration, quarantine and inspection by coast guard authority or vessels of deep draught or excessive length. Holding ground, broken coral. Anchorage "Charlie": Long Bay, shallow draught, holding ground fine sand and shell. Anchorage "Delta": East Gregerie Channel, general anchorage. Holding ground, broken shell. Anchorage "Echo": Cay Bay, shallow draught. Holding ground, coral, sand and shells. Anchorage "Foxtrot": West of West Gregerie Channel, deep draught anchorage or explosive anchorage.

Depth at the harbour entrance is 10.0m, width at entrance 0.4km; diameter of basin 1.2km. The Charlotte Amalie entrance channel has been dredged to 9.4m. Access to Crown Bay is through the East Gregerie, and West Gregerie channels, the west channel has a depth of over 11.0m as far as the berths.

Leading lights range main harbour bearing 344°. Berg Hill height lower, 60m QEG, upper 92m OGE 4-5s. Aero beacon: Grambolda Hill West Gregerie. Prominent land marks: Grown Mountain (highest peak).

Range, 0.3m; prevailing current to NW from SE.

Tugs available up to 2,500hp through West Indies Transport Company. Use of tug lines recommended.

Prevailing winds: E/NE'ly, force 4 (trade winds). Local exceptional conditions: Veering wind, visibility, generally clear. Swell and sea state: Average, 0.6-1.2m seas; swell 0.3-0.9m. Average annual rainfall is approx 2,000mm. Temperatures range from 79°F to 85°F. Port facilities and services may be subject to disruption, following severe hurricane force winds.

VHF: Ch 16, l3. US territorial waters port control on Ch 14 after initial contact Ch 16.

Upon arrival all passengers and crew of a vessel must physically report to immigration for inspection with all required documents, if a vessel arrives outside normal working hours a call must be made 24 hours in advance.

Notify ETA at least 24 hours in advance, with a 2 hour update prior to arrival.
