Sandusky (USSKY)

The harbour is a main shipping point for coal and salt.

Sandusky Harbour is located on the southern shore of Lake Erie in the city of Sandusky located about 52nm E of Toledo.

Draught 8.0m, LOA 304.8m, beam 23.78m, 37,690DWT.

Approx 3,200,000t of cargo handled annually.

There is an anchorage in a basin on the E side of Sandusky Bay approx 1.3nm SE of the entrance.

The harbour is entered from Lake Erie through a dredged entrance channel that leads SW from deep water in the lake along the NW side of a jetty extending NE from Cedar Point. Inside Cedar Point, the channel turns SSW across Sandusky Bay. Midway across the bay the channel divides with the deeper channel leading W then S along a deep draught wharf to a turning basin at the SSW corner of the harbour. The shallower channel continues SSW to a channel leading W along the Sandusky docks to the turning basin. The dredged channels are marked by lighted and unlighted buoys and lighted ranges. The lighted clock tower of the Erie County Courthouse is prominent on the line of 017° Inner Range which marks Upper and Lower Straight channels. Federal project depths are 7.9m in Moseley Channel, 7.6m in the Upper Straight Channel and Upper Bay Channel, 7.3m in Lower Bay Channel and the turning basin, 6.7m in Dock Channel, and 6.4m in Lower Straight Channel. Caution: A submarine cable crosses the inner end of Moseley Channel, vessels are cautioned not to drag anchor in this area.

Search and rescue functions are handled by Marblehead Coast Guard Station, 4nm NW of Cedar Point.

A large amusement park on Cedar Point, brightly lit at night is conspicuous. The most prominent object in the park is the 100m observation tower on the E side of Cedar Point, 0.9nm from the N extremity. Sandusky Harbour Pierhead Light (41°30.0'N 082°40.5'W), 20m above the water, is shown from a white skeleton tower with an enclosed top on the outer end of the jetty that extends NE from Cedar Point.

Tugs are available from Cleveland or Toledo.

For crew not to be detained onboard each crew member must have a visa in their passport or Seaman's Book.
