Salem (USSLM)

The port currently operates a fast ferry service to Boston through the Salem Ferry Terminal. The second terminal is set to begin construction in the summer of 2023 and will handle wind turbines, including the pre-assembly, transportation, staging and storage.

Summer Zone for ships over 100m in length and Winter Seasonal Area for ships of 100m or less in length, Winter Nov 1 to Mar 31, Summer Apr 1 to Oct 31.

Salem is situated on the W coast of Massachusetts Bay.

LOA 28.1m and beam 9.1m.

Anchorage can be obtained by small vessels in depths of 6.0m just inside Naugus Head.

Salem Harbour is approached from NE through a dredged section of Salem Channel, which is buoyed, and has a depth of 8.8m, with a mid width of 0.025nm, this section of the channel is marked at its NE end by No 16 Lightbuoy, moored on the E side of an obstruction with a swept depth of 8.2m over it, lying 0.6nm ENE of Juniper Point, and then leads 1nm SW when it turns W to Salem Harbour Wind Berth. On the SE side of the channel are the rocky patches which border the NW side of Middle Ground and Naugus Head the NW point of Marblehead. On the NW side of the channel Winter Island, lying S of Juniper Point, has the red conical tower of the disused Fort Pickering Lighthouse at its SE point, and the building of a disused coastguard station on its S side, these are prominent marks.

Abbott Rock Beacon (pole on granite base, red and white diamond daymark, white reflector), which stands 0.2nm SE of Juniper Point (42°32'N 070°52'W) and Great Aquavitae Beacon (metal pole with framework pyramid, red and white diamond daymark, white reflector), 0.32nm farther SE.
