🧭 Navigation Information
Anchorages
Available at sea buoy "2PR" and in Port Royal Sound. Port Royal Sound has depths of 8.0-15.0m, and is sometimes used as a harbour of refuge in winter. The best anchorage is W of Bay Point. The bottom S of Bay Point is rocky and the holding ground is poor.
Approaches
A channel with a depth of 8.2m (MLW) and a width of 152.3m at the channel entrance and 121.9m at the head of the harbour, leads for a distance of 18nm from sea buoy to the harbour. A bar extends 9nm SSE and S from the entrance to Port Royal Sound, the outermost part of which is Martins Industry, with a least charted depth of 2.4m over it. A dredged channel leads N across Martins Industry through Entrance Channel for 4.5nm and then NNW through Baypoint Reach for 6.25nm to the entrance to the sound, 1nm W of Bay Point (32°15.5'N 080°38.0'W). A depth of 8.2m exists on the axis of Entrance Channel, approx 0.9nm N of No "2PR" Lightbuoy. Port Royal Sound Lights: Front light (red rectangle, white stripe, on dolphin) (32°12.4'N 080°35.8'W); Rear light (red rectangle, white stripe, on framework tower on piles (1.5nm from front light) From the vicinity of "P" Lightbuoy (safe water) (32°05.0'N 080°35.0'W), about 11.25nm S of Bull Point, the alignment (354.5°) of these light leads through the centre of Entrance Channel, marked by leading lights and lightbuoys (lateral), to the end of Entrance Channel leading line, passing (with positions relative to Bull Point (32°16.5'N 080°35.0'W): W of Saint Michael's Breakers (8.0nm S). Shoaling has been reported on the SW extremity of Saint Michael's Breaker. Then E of a dangerous wreck (position approximate) (6.25nm S), lying close WSW of No 15 Lightbuoy (lateral) The track then leads NNW through Bay Point reach passing: ENE of No 19 Lightbuoy (port hand) (5.5nm SSW). A dangerous wreck (position doubtful lies 0.4nm E. Then ENE of No 23 Lightbuoy (port hand) (4.24nm SW). Then ENE of Fishing Rip (4.25nm SW). Then WSW of Great North Breakers (3.0nm SW). Then ENE of Hilton Head, the E extremity of Hilton Head Island (5.5nm SW). Joiner Bank, which dries, extends E and S from Hilton Head. Then WSW of Bay Point (3.25nm WSW), the S extremity of Saint Phillips Island. The track then leads to a position about 0.6nm W of Bay Point, between No 24 and 25 Lightbuoys (lateral),at the beginning of the Fort Fremont Reach leading line. Middle shoal lies close SW of No 25 Lightbuoy.

Pilot
Compulsory for foreign merchant vessels and US vessels engaged in foreign trade. Pilots board vessels at the Port Royal Lighted Whistle Buoy (2PR) (32° 05.0'N 080°35.0'W), from a motor launch or fishing vessel. The distance from boarding point to berth is 16nm.
Port limits
The limits inside which Navigation Rules for United States Inland Waters apply are a line drawn from the W extremity of Bull Point on Capers Island to Port Royal Sound Entrance Channel rear leading light, then 259° to the E extremity of Hilton Head in (32°13.0'N 080°40.1'W).
Principal navigation aids
Entrance Channel is marked by leading light structures, the front (tower on piles; red rectangular topmark with a white stripe) stands 4nm SSE of Bay Point, and the rear (Framework tower on piles with similar topmark) 1.5nm N of the front light structure. These leading light structures in line, bearing 354.25°, lead through Entrance Channel. No "2PR" Lightbuoy is moored outside the bar 9.5nm SSE of Hilton Head (32°13'N 080°40'W). A dangerous wreck lies 1.5nm SSW and 2.5nm S of the lightbuoy. Entrance Channel is marked on its E side by No 4 Lightbuoy and then by lightbuoys and buoys. A dangerous wreck, the position of which is approx, lies close E of No 15 Lightbuoy. Baypoint Reach is marked on the E side by lightbuoys. A dangerous wreck, the position of which is doubtful, lies on the E side of the channel, 0.5nm ENE of No 19 Lightbuoy and similar wrecks lie close E of No 24 Lightbuoy (starboard hand; bell) and approx 0.1nm S of No 25 Lightbuoy (port hand).
Restrictions
The channel is capable of handling vessels up to 182.9m LOA.
Tidal range and flow
Range 2.2m. Mean range 2.3m, diurnal range 2.7m, Mean tide 1.4m. On the bar the tidal streams have a rate of 1.5kts and set fair with the channel, except at the turn from Entrance Channel into Bay Point Reach, where a strong current sets diagonally across the channel. Here on the outgoing tide, mariners should exercise caution lest they be set onto Saint Michael's Breakers, E of the Bar Channel. In the entrance the tidal stream attains a rate of 2kts. Winds greatly influence the rate of stream. After prolonged E winds, the outgoing stream often attains a rate of 5kts. Tide rips on Fishing Rip and Middle Shoal have the appearance of breakers at times. In Entrance Channel slack water before the ingoing stream occurs about 6 hours before HW at Charleston. Slack water before the outgoing stream at about the time of HW at Charleston. Tidal current at berth 4kts.
Tugs
One tug "Timothy McAllister", 2,400hp available. Contact McAllister of Port Royal +1 843 546 0765.
Weather

Winds are generally from the NE in fall and winter and S in spring and summer; the average wind speed is around 10mph. Summer is the rainy season during which 38% of the annual rainfall is accumulated on about 7-9 days per month, mostly in the form of showers and thunderstorms. Tropical cyclones are most likely in late summer and early fall. In the Beaufort area; they occur about once every five years on average. Summer afternoon temperatures average around 32°C with about 64 days a season recording 32°C or above; night time temperatures are usually about 22°C. Winter temperatures are generally about 16°C during the afternoon and about 5°C at night. Temperatures drop below freezing on about 22 days a season, while temperatures of -7°C or less occur only about once a year, Winter precipitation account for about 20% of the annual total, falling mostly as steady rain. Each winter month averages about five days with measurable precipitation. Fog occurs mostly in the winter and may be experienced from Oct to Apr, or after a very warm day when there is a sharp drop in temperature at night, It usually burns off in the forenoon. E'ly winds bring in the fog and W winds clear it away.
